The Great Eastern:: 17/03/2004

Mostly based on panoramas we took to promote a photography exhibition in The Great Eastern in 2001.

There are a few photographs from the rest of the hotel, including the upper floors which we got a guided tour of by the wee guy who manned the door. The upper floors were both burnt out and riddled with dry rot, so NOT ideal for a wander around!

Lennox Castle Hospital:: 25/02/2004

Addition of a collection of Lennox Hospital photographs taken in May 2003. Just some bad photos at the moment, but will hopefully develop over time!

Dowsing the Molendinar Burn:: 25/02/2004

WHEN: 10:30AM, Sunday 29th February 2004 (yes, sundays have mornings too!)

WHAT: Starting at Jail Square at the foot of the Saltmarket, site of former public hangings, the plan is to use dowsing (A.K.A divining or water witching) or anything else you can think of, to track the flow of the Molendinar to its source. Its could be a 3 mile walk so no stilletos anyone!! Needless to say this takes us to lunchtime and we should have worked up an appetite, so we can get some lunch and a beer - as tribute to the first beer in Scotland being brewed on the banks of the Molendinar (should an excuse be needed thanks for giving us one Jim).

Woodilee Hospital / Barony Parochial Asylum:: 11/01/2004

Addition of a collection of Woodilee Hospital photographs taken in March 2003.Also includes a timeline.

Cardross - St Peters Seminary: 17/08/2003

As promised (a couple of month ago!) I've put together a collection of images taken at St Peters Seminary. This place is simply stunning. A massive concrete building nestling amongst beautiful woodland... not your everyday discovery. It was award winning in its day but has lain derelict for the last 20 years.

This project now features a set of engineering drawings. Well worth a look.

Govan Graving Docks:: 05/03/2003

The photos that were taken in December at the Govan Graving Docks have finally been arranged into something approaching an order. A wee bit of research has shown that there are substantial plans to redevelop this site in the near future as part of the ongoing regeneration of the area. Stand by for another piece of Glasgow' maritime legacy disappearing. There are some links to articles about the plans for the site on this page.

Another corner of Glasgow is captured!!

Bomb found at the Granary:: 28/11/2002

Another chapter in the history unfolded at Meadowside Granary yesterday when a W11 bomb was discovered. The bomb was spotted in the bucket of a digger while work to clear the site was being done. Quite a surprise for the guy in the digger I should imagine. The area has been evacuated. (I was pleased to provide the BBC with some photos for their story!!)

Rail...:: 23/11/2002

A few photos to get the rail section under way...

More from the Virtual Mitchell collection - The Granary - The Early Years:: 27/09/2002

Grahamston Book - "Glasgow's Forgotten Village - The Grahamston Story":: 18/09/2002

Uncovering the myths and mysteries of the village which disappeared to make way for Central station - a fascinating collection of research and stories into the history of Grahamston Village and the role it played in the development of Glasgow. Well worth a read!!

Tunnels Article in the Herald:: 07/09/2002

Last year an article about Glasgow's subterranean culture appeared, which I've just discovered in the Herald archives. Perhaps not the best article ever written, but still...

Glasgow Harbour Tunnel [Rotundas]:: 07/09/2002

The Virtual Mitchell library has some pictures of the tunnel between the Rotundas. Click on the Area link (on the left) and then look through the Finnieston photos. There a photo from 1896 of horses and carts entering and leaving a rotunda and one of the pedestrian tunnel. Enjoy! (thanks to Stef Robb for this one)

Redevelopment for HiddenGlasgow is planned!

OK, its been a while since new content has been uploaded - and its not because I don't have plenty! Instead, it because I have simply too many thing to add to the site that I've decided it needs a database behind it!! It'll take a wee while to do so the occasional new thing may be added meantime...but when its back, it'll be better than ever!

BOOK: The Grahamston Story 12/08/2002

Grahamston vanished beneath the foundations of Glasgow Central Station more than 100 years ago, but its memory lives on in buildings, in street patterns and not least in the urban legend of an abandoned village beneath the platforms of Scotland’s busiest station. This book promises to uncover the facts and fictions wrapped up in the Grahamston story.

Busy Busy Busy:: 18/06/2002

I've not had a lot of time to add much content to these pages lately. But...time will be found soon and all the new photographs will be made available for all to see.

A few panoramas taken on a grey day around the Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens.

Virtual Tour of Kelvingrove Art Gallery:: 09/06/2002

I took these panoramas a good while ago, and its taken till now to do something with them. Still better late than never (I hope!)

Glasgow Harbour Tunnel [Rotundas]:: 07/06/2002

These two round buildings on opposing banks of the Clyde were once the access points to Glasgow Harbour Tunnels. Sadly these tunnels are now completely closed off [last used in 1986].

Seamen’s’ Institute and McAlpine Street Police Office Lost:: 30/05/2002

Two of the few buildings that were part of the Broomielaws maritime past have been demolished. This is covered in the Glasgow City of Sculpture May newsletter.

Loads more photos of the granary - both inside and out - have been added!!

Meadowside Granary:: 18/05/2002

I was inside the 1960 Granary building today. Most of the machinery and silos are gone - much of which was taken out just last week! Photos from today's visit will be added to the site within the next few days. Should be some nice ones of the demolition work on the old buildings. Click here for a taster!

Meadowside Granary:: 11/05/2002

Demolition of the Old Building is now well under way with the turrets all gone now. Meantime I've added a few more photos to the Granary Project.

Zoos & Menageries:: 10/04/2002

OK, you might wonder what on earth a zoos section has been added for...well, it started with a bit of information about the panopticon in the Trongate which led to the Scottish Zoo on New City Road where apparently the stone animal cages can still be found (still to check this) and it turned out that the elephant in the Kelvingrove was an attraction at this zoo!

New Links added:: 10/04/2002

A few new links have been added to the selection. Enjoy.

High Court Tunnels:: 07/04/2002

Contributors to the project have suggested that there is a tunnel that leads from the old High Court building at the bottom of the Saltmarket, across the road and into Glasgow Green.

This was used to take prisoners from the court who were about to be publicly hung in the park. The last time it was used was around 1869 when Dr. Pritchard, the infamous poisoner, was executed in front of 100,000 spectators.

It is also alleged that there is another, longer tunnel that leads from the courthouse, up the Saltmarket and comes out at the tollbooth at Glasgow Cross. This is where they hung the prisoners who had not been granted a public execution. Does anyone know more?

New Projects:: 06/04/2002

You may have noticed that new projects have been listed. These are of course all works in progress, and indeed some are works yet to be started! So, as always, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions please drop me a line, or post the suggestions on the boards to help get the discussions going.

Rotunda Tunnels:: 26/03/2002

There has been much talk about the Glasgow Harbour Tunnels that link the North and South Rotundas together under the Clyde. Originally there were 3 tunnels - 2 vehicular and 1 pedestrian. Does anyone know if the pedestrian tunnel was filled in or is this still accessible?
