Sculptures and Statues around Glasgow

Postby Fossil » Tue May 11, 2004 10:25 pm

Anything since the 60’s and onwards would be good to see.

What happened to the sculpture that was outside Fraser’s . (A big bird thing) :?

A good question - Buchanan St just isn't he same without it.

Given its appearance I used to call it The Whale's Tail though myself, though I seem to remember it was supposed to be some sort of eagle....?

Was it not called "Concept of Kentigern". Why not check out the excellent "Glasgow City of Sculpture" website.

And the plaque on the back a brass copy of which can be seen in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh:

The bronze that used to stand outside Frasers in Buchanan Street was called 'St Mungos bird ' it was erected in 1977 after the new landscaping in Buchanan Street. It was designed by Neil Livingstone, and I think ????
the last time I saw it was at the Burrel????.I remember it caused a bit of a storm because of the cost and it got coated in paint a couple of times in it's former site.I loved it.but my favorite statue is the flying tramcar at the transport museum. :D

What about the late great Donald Dewar,I dont know what the big deal is with repairing his specks, any time I saw him his glasses were at a bit of a jaunty angle. In Glasgow if you are a statue and you get a cone on your head ,lets face it you have made it ,the highest complement. :D

It was called Spirit Of Kentigern. I remember at the time Livingstone said it represented the Glaswegian's heavy struggle and fight to rise above his/her surroundings.

An oldie, King Billy in front of Glasgow Cross Station.

An even older oldie, the Battlefield Monument in 1889, just after it was built at Langside village.

Anyone got a pic of the statue up by the Cathedral?
I think it's King Billy on his horse - the important feature being that the horse's tail is a ball-joint, and swings in the wind :)

Does anyone have a pic of the 'Blobs' behind the BT building on Clyde Street? I'll probably take one on my way to work tomorrow anyway.

I must remember to photograph the tree at the courier corner on Blythswood Square, if anyone gets the chance go take a look at what they've done with the cuddly toys.

Cheers,

J

"The Amazing Technicolour Turds" ...but is it art (no pic Im afraid)? If you take a wee peek in lexander Bain you'll also see a giant Bean Stalk and a huge painting made up of 24 separate canvasses, I'll try and get pics of them too
here i go, it's coming for me through the trees

Glasgow Uni's lovely dinosaur...

Currently sporting a rather fetching bandage on its tail! I wouldn't like to have been the vet that had to apply that...

nodrog, could you perhaps get a few pics of the, er, interesting pieces of art around Glasgow Uni? I'm thinking of the one outside the Gregory building in particular.

Well, seeing as you asked nicely, I took a wee stroll round campus at lunchtime and made a quick survey.

This would be the one you were meaning outside Geology:
Image

Lots of other bits and pieces though - theres an entire sculpture garden at the Huntarian art gallery, and many of the older buildings have wonderfully detailed sculptural features I really must get around to documenting.

But this'll do for you for the moment:

On the Modern Languages building:

Outside the Hub, part of the most modern 'installation':

This is art- honest! One of Two Planes Cast In Situ, or something along those lines. Notice the other one in the background, currently being used as an advertising board!

On the Engineering building:

Gateway on the Pearce lodge, which was built from bits of the old college from the High Street:

More to come...
