There was quite a good editorial in the Herald today about this; apparently - and this will come as no shock to any of us I suspect - Glasgow city council has the worst record in Scotland when it comes to serving repairs notices or issuing compulsory purchase orders for listed buildings....

I'm also wondering - when the virginia galleries were demolished in similar circumstances, they said the stone from the facade would be retained for possible future use (despite it being a boring frontage and not why the building was interesting at all!) - yet as far as i know there's been no mention of anything similar happening here - yet surely the signature thompson doorways could be retained and reused in any future development at the very very least!

The more i think about this the more bloody annoyed i get....

Took a trip myself this morning. This is some of the stone work.
Interior panelling, plasterwork and arch intact. Ironwork .o.k.
All fireplaces are gone. Sometime ago.

I'm fecking sick of this, these arses that are entrusted, and are supposed to look after this city. All that property owners do is let a piece of property that they want to build on fall into disrepair or encourage vandals to inhabit and tear it down piece by piece. It happened to a plot next to my dads this is how it went:-

1.Two nice adjacent bungalows with a bit of land are bought.
2. Planning application to demolish and build new flats
3. Permission refused.
4. Properties neglected, not secured
5. Vandals take over, property damaged
6. Windows smashed, doors kicked in still not secured
7. Mysterious fire rendering BOTH buildings beyond repair
8. Buildings torn down
9. Hey presto some nice land to build on

I bet it happens all the time. These building probably were not of any historic significance but it angers me that two nice sandstone houses are buldozed with no regard for the planning laws.

THEY SHOULD NOT GET AWAY WITH IT.

sorry for ranting but it angers me.

Are there any sort of pressure group that attempts to put pressure on councils for this sort of thing :?:

Just thinking on what Nodrog said about it being very 'convenient' to some interests that this type of thing happens, as with the Virginia Galleries. This current Thompson disaster was preceded a year or so (?) back with his warehouses at Watson Street. This 'development prospect' hung about for maybe more than a couple of decades slowly disintegrating - then , flash, bang, wallop it was declared unsafe had to be demolished with all due haste. The convenient-for-some conclusion is the current proposed office/retail development around that part of the Trongate area that was so badly slagged off in another Hidden Glasgow thread some weeks ago.

The same thing is happening with the old Sports Centre in Springburn.

Was there not a protest a few years back where a group of folk went around putting loads of lit tea lights on the buildings that had been allowed to get into a state?

I think it was about 6 or 7 years ago??

Todays ET:
http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5027136.html

HERITAGE chiefs are to make a last-ditch bid to save key features from the former offices of architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.
Historic Scotland and Glasgow City Council officials will meet today to discuss what can be salvaged from the A-listed building, which is being demolished.
The structure, on the corner of West Regent and Wellington Street, is unsafe but experts hope to save doorways and cornices before the demolition.

I feel they've maybe left it a bit late, given the stuff thats already been skipped and dumped...

Looks like it'll be in a landfill site by the end of the week if they keep working at this rate.

Here's a worrying thought: how long has the Egyptian Halls been up for sale?

And how long do you think it will be before it's in the same state as this was?
Too few hours in the day.
