The Hub, Glasgow University

Postby martin » Fri May 28, 2004 1:03 am

The Hub (previously known as the Refectory) closes this week for extensive refurbishment, which won't be completed until October 2005. The last time anything major was done in there was 1982.

Archive pics from some rather old copies of Glasgow University Guardian I found lying around the office.

8O - never seen that before. That's quite a building - fantastic detail.
A sad loss by the looks of it.

Check out the local history section at Borders books. Large swathes of Glasgow were obliterated in the seventies.

Incidentally does anyone have any COLOUR pics of this or anything in Glasgow from before 1980?

And why are colour pics so rare? The virtual mitchell is entirely black and white, there must have been someone in Glasgow with a colour camera at that time?

Lovely attention to detail, Fossil - right down to making sure there was a train there too!

Here's my contribution - roughly 360 degree view from the top of the University Tower in about 1904, and again from last summer.

The main thing thats changed is how less smoky the city is nowadays!

Love the GU aerial shots, Gordon.

Now, I can't be sure of this (I'm away from my library) but I *think* the Christian Institute Building in Bothwell Street was replaced by the Student Loan Company building, rather than the (very recently demolished) Scottish Enterprise building, as suggested earlier on this thread. Anyone else agree?

Brilliant to see so many well-planned and well-taken "after" photographs here.
