Whitehill School:
I received this message from Tom Cunningham, whose Mum went to Whitehill :-

I am writing a book on Scotland's Native American connections. The major one is as I suspect you already know, - literally - right on your doorstep. Next to the old school building is where Buffalo Bill's Wild West show was located in 1891-92.

Now, get this for a unique claim to fame for your school - the school opened, as you say, in 1891, but did you know that the official opening , according to a report in the Evening Citizen, was on the night of 16th November? - ie the same night as the Buffalo Bill's Wild West show opened just a stone's throw away!

The shows I remember were the ones in Royston, somewhere near Glenconner Park, Broomfield Road pitches and a couple of times on the land at Hogganfield Loch on the opposite corner from the New Inn pub at Millerston Cross.

Royston is just east of Townhead, whereas Robroyston is up to the NE of Balrnock and Barmulloch.

Difference?

Probably five or six strands of DNA and about £200,000 in terms of income.

I've all sorts of stories about you... not sure they would ehlp the project though!!!
:D
There used to be in the 1940/1950's a fairground on the Edinburgh Road near the Rex Picture house.
It was very popular and the show family Cadona ran many of the stalls and rides. One of the Cadona family was in my class at Haghill Primary school during the season.

There was also a fairground held each year in the south pollok recreation ground between Cowglen Road and Boydstone Rd. Originally at the top end near Boydstone Road then moved for a few years in the 70's to Househill Park, then back to the pollok recreation ground. Stopped due to the pre works for the M77.

There is no chance of it comming back just like the football pitches, GCC promised to reinstate these after the motorway was constructed, but now we are to be blessed by the newer bigger brighter and no doubt more expensive Pollok Shopping Centre (  Opps. did I type Pollok Shopping Centre out loud) I should of course use the new gentrified name of Silverburn Shopping Centre. ::): ::): Strange though, I don't ever remember it running silver, I have seen it, blue, red, brown, black but strangly enough never silver. 8O But I suppose I am just old fashioned, I like white kitchen appliances and not silver ones.

Or am I just an old cynical twally?

I hope i'm not straying too far from the theme here...but this thread reminded me of a time when i went to see a Circus in 1981 in what i thought was a most unusual urban location...i would love to hear from anyone else who was there!

A circus came to what is now the BMX track at the top of Great Western Road (just before the roundabout at Drumchapel about 200 Yards up from B&Q on the opposite side of the road) (see pic)

This is almost a pinpoint to where the tent was. The show itself featured typical shows- trapeeze artists, lion taming, elephants etc and that eastern European (or Russian?) woman who tied up her hair in a pony tail then swung from it in a circular fashion overhead whilst connected to a rope of sorts. I saw them on TV a few years later with the same "trick".

I just thought it was an unusual location to put a circus....

In the early-mid 70's, I recall "the Shows" turning up at the 50 Pitches
playing fields in Shieldhall on a regular basis. Just about where St Anthonys Juniors now play their home matches. Can't tell you how many years previously they turned up though.

Fairgrounds

Postby Linda » Wed Jun 14, 2006 9:03 pm

Hello,
My gg Grandfather (Gymnast) and gg Grandmother were showpeople. My gg Grandmother died in a caravan at Vinegar Hill and my gg Grandfather died in Duke St Hospital but lived at Vinegar Hill once he was no longer travelling. I was delighted to see the photos posted here. They really help paint a picture of their life.

Have you tried http://www.thegalloper.com?

Good luck with your project. :D

Re Vinegarhill address, I grew up there in the 50,s & 60,s and the address was 843 between Fielden St & Yate St on the opposite side of the Gallowgate.
