I can't believe those images. I just came across this thread and my heart is thumping.
Because i live away from Glasgow - a lot of my dreams are about closes like the ones in the images here. i'm not sure why. Odd...since I grew up in a high rise flat in Germiston. But my mum's family lived near Main Street in Bridgeton and the tenements around there (most are gone) had those interiors and stained glass windows.
As a kid - I visited the tenements off Main Street in Greenhead street (just next to the clyde) a couple of days before they were demolished. Hundreds of hooses and places like those photographed just abandoned and awaiting the bulldozer.
i knew that those black stoned buildings were special and people had belonged there.
When i come back to Glasgow - it does break my heart in a way. Because I'm just old enough to know what once existed in places I knew. If I took people there today it now looks as if nothing had ever been there. No masses of people on a Saturday in the Main street or endless rows of shops at ground level.
So it is wonderful to see these places in the west end and Dennistoun but it also brings something a lot bigger than sadness and I'm sure that I am not the only person to know a feeling that is hard to explain.
How can you explain something that is part of you but no longer exists?
I guess that is what draws people to this site - the sense of something having been and now gone. Of human warmth and community - just vanished and nothing left. Sometimes it makes me incredibly angry and bitter - but you've got to think of the future.
all the best

If I still lived in my last flat on Allison Street where I lived until a couple of weeks ago, I could have added to those photies with some bonus shots of empty Buckfast and Lambrini bottles within my close.
Alas it was not to be.
I had mates up from Newcastle who'd never stayed in a Glasgow tenement before. They thought the tiling resembled an old public toilet!!

Stunning pics cumbo.
To think of all the people that have walked through the closes and had the pleasure of looking at those for over a century.
My favourite design is the third from the bottom.
