When i was in Ukraine, my wife took me to her town's main war museum, outside it overlooking the River was a huge "Mother Russia" type statue.

Leading up to it was a very wide and very long polished stone footpath, with what i thought was an anti - slip pattern on the stone tiles...only it wasn't an anti slip pattern, it was the chiselled out names of all the war dead who were buried in a mass grave under our feet. Very chilling and very emotional.

I'd love to go to the Ukraine, still trying to tug the family heart strings on that one.

Roo do you have any pics?

Aye, tons but they are mainly pre - digi days and i'll need to scan them, lots from Rostov - on - Don too, so that's the excuse i'll put them under the town twinning thread which i saw on here somewhere, before we go on a complete tangerine.

I have many original photographs of the Childrens Sculpture, but alas, no Scanner  This event, more than any other single event, sums up for me, the depth of depravity to which humanity will sometimes sink.

The annihilation of the Czech town of Lidice is one of the most notorious instances of the Nazi practice of reprisal.

On May 27, 1942, Reinhard Heydrich, head of the RSHA, the Reichsprotektor of Czechoslovakia, the man who had convened the Wannsee Conference only four months previously, was severely wounded in a grenade attack on his car near Prague by two Czech parachutists sent from London by the Czech government-in-exile. The two Czechs managed to leave the scene and took refuge in the Karl Borromaeus Church in Prague.

On June 4, Heydrich died of his wounds. The Nazis swore revenge: they ordered the execution of ten thousand Czechs and threatened the expulsion of millions. The Karl Borromaeus Church, where the assassins and more than one hundred members of the Czech resistance were hiding, was besieged. Everyone in the church was killed by the SS.

In Lezaky, a village east of Prague, where the assassins' radio transmitter was discovered, every adult was killed. The children were forcibly removed to Germany for "reeducation," a process that only two of them survived.

At dawn on June 10, all the residents of Lidice, a village ten miles outside Prague, were taken from their homes. They were shot in batches of ten at a time behind a barn. By late afternoon, 192 men and boys and 71 women had been murdered. The other women were sent to concentration camps. The children were dispersed, some to concentration camps, although a few who were considered sufficiently Aryan were sent to Germany. The SS then razed the town and tried to eradicate its memory. The name of Lidice was expunged from all official records.

The Czechs were stunned by the Nazis' brutality. They also came to view resistance activities with considerably less enthusiasm. The assassination was so unpopular that the Czech government-in-exile denied all responsibility for it, even after the war.

Apparently as a "tribute" to Heydrich's memory, his SS colleagues gave the code name Operation Reinhard to the Final Solution to the Jewish Problem carried out by the General-Government in Poland in the death camps of Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka.

BOMBS OVER GLASGOW

Postby Socceroo » Tue May 09, 2006 11:09 pm

Kelvingrove Museum 1941. Exhibits are inspected after Luftmine fell in Kelvin Way resulting in damage to the Museum.

Interestingly the notes with the photo cite that it was a mine which fell in Kelvin Way which took out 50 tons of window glass in the Museum. Previously i had read elsewhere that the Kelvin Way Bridge bomb was smaller.

This would be the same mine which took out the windows on Glasgow University's Bute Hall up on Gilmore Hill. This gives you an idea of the range and devastating effect of Luftmines.

It would not have been a night for cycling down Kelvin Way that night.

These were real terror weapons which were responsible for many and perhaps the majority of Glaswegians and visitors to the City who were killed during raids.

Nelson Street in Tradeston, Deanston Drive in Shawlands, Kilmun Street in Maryhill and Govan Road are just some of the locations where these weapons landed and took out entire buildings, parts of streets and which resulted in multiple fatalities.

Deanston Drive?

Did the mine fall on the the site of the nursery school?

I lived in a flat oppossite and when I came to sell, one of the questions from the buyer's solictor was about the metal strapping on the building, round the bay windows.

I had never noticed this until that point and someone told me that it may have been bomb damage.

That would explain things.

My father lived in Tradeston as a child during the war and says they rarely went to the shelters in the back court (probably wouldn't have been much good anyway by the sounds of it). They remained in the tenement and he recalls feeling as if every stone in the building had lifted, seperated and resettled back in place when a bomb fell nearby.

It might need metal strapping after that!

The metal strappings were added to a lot of tenements from the late 1970's onwards. The process is called tying and is done to restrain bulges and movements in the walls. The Nursery site is far too small to have been a result of one of these Luftimines so I suspect it would be the the gap site in the sandstone tenements where the Council-type housing now stands (see page 4 of this thread).

According to information that i have, the Nursery in Deanston Drive was the site of the heavy bombing and parachute mine which resulted in so many fatalities.

Also the South West end of James Gray Street opposite was rebuilt as it was partially destroyed. If you look closely you can see that the front facade of this cluster of tenements are all built in very regular machine cut clean red sandstone with a relatively modern ventilation grille (post war) built into the solumns.

If you look at some of the blonde sandstone balustrades to the parapets of tenements on Deanston Drive near the nursery you can see that some of the stone spindles are missing and there is shrapnel damage to the pilasters also.

As Crusty says a lot of Glasgow Tenements are tied together to prevent wall spread and minimise the effects of settlement etc. Most Glasgow Tenements were assessed by Structural Engineers during the massive tenement refurbishment programme of the late 1970's - late 1980's.

I was using Local Live to check out some former WW2 sites around Glasgow and found these bomb craters on the Kilpatrick Hills high above Alexandria near Bonhill.
Made me wonder if there are any others still visible?
This was the site of a Decoy City that was used to lure the German bombers away from strategic areas of Glasgow and the Clydeside. I wouldn't have fancied being in the command bunker when those near misses landed!

Pgcc93, good research. What's that greener straight strip at the 2 o'clock
position to the command bunker?

55 degrees 58 mins N

4 degrees 31 mins W

Can't find the positional data on Live Local :(

Cheers Pripyat, I was looking further West, looks like water filled craters at 55deg 58' 11"N 4deg 31' 60"W and also just to the immediate north west.
