GANGS OF GLASGOW
For more than 100 years Glasgow was known world-wide for its gangsters and
villains and the city's notoriety was sealed by the publication of the novel 'No
Mean City' in 1935. Bob Wylie delves into the city's archives to investigate
the truth behind the origins of Glasgow's violent reputation.

I've just looked at the Radio Scotland schedule online and it says that Bill Whiteford is the presenter, not Bob Wylie.

30 years of gang terror in city scheme

Scotland's newest judge today slammed the never- ending culture of gang violence in Easterhouse.

Lord Matthews sentenced a teenage knife killer to eight years and told him: "When I started at the Bar I was involved in cases like this. They are still going on 30 years later. It is thoroughly depressing."

Before Lord Matthews at the High Court in Glasgow was Paul Spence, 18, of Easterhouse.

He had been found guilty at an earlier trial of the culpable homicide of a man who was trying to break up a gang fight.

advertisementJohn Purcell, of Millennium Gardens, Easterhouse, was attacked last September 23 in Easterhouse Road as he walked home.

He died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The court heard there was a clash between two gangs, the Aggro and the Den Toi.

OK i will ask the question....
What did they do that struck fear into the hapless who found themselves in the wrong part of outer, outer Glasgow....

Barrowfield had 3 gangs one part time The Daly Toi and 2 others The Torch and The Spur that would fight to the death most nights Samurai swords the tool of choice...
Taxi drivers would not venture there even in the day time and the polis wouldnae come at night...
Furniture motors with english firms names would be plundered in broad daylight and wifies would wait on the cut price deals scottish hauliers knew the rep....
The Sunblest bakeries would be done almost on a daily basis...
Still can't look at a coconut snowball to this day...
As the big guys would always give us weans a few .....Add this up to about 12 a week for 8 years and you get the picture...

Royston had the Shamrock ....
Possil had the Fleet...
Parkhead had the Border the Rebels and the WeeMen

Every estate had them there was even a website that named them...
Never lasted long think the Webmaster got a knock on the door...

The old gangs lived by a code.
Alas i think this is dying with my generation...
Someone indeed turned round to me tonight and said..
"Our's is the last generation to have manners."
I have thought about that a lot ....Bloody true as well.

Aye and so did the Krays. Who did you run with, the Rose Tinted Co optimists. We'll nostalgically look back on chibbing you, ya bass.

Like i said when you selectively quoted...
The old gangs lived by a code.
If you went onto their "Turf" yes you would have gotten chibbed...
I don't hide behind rose tinted glasses just seems that with the current generation almost everywhere after dark is a no go area....
How many times have we opened the paper and read so and so killed his best mate or he stabbed his own brother whilst high on drugs...
Rose tinted glasses i think not....

So kindly wipe the Brylcreem from your eyes and ponder this....
When was the last time a teenager in a burberry cap held a door open for you...
When was the last time you were given a seat on the bus by said "yoof's"
Please and thank you seem to be words of the past as parents are out there playing with their own kids and do not have the time to teach them basic manners....
Manners are not dead but the are certainly in decline...
Our Culture is evolving and whilst there are some good kids still out there they are vastly outnumbered by the scumbags...

But back to the rose tinted comment you made earlier....

This is from my own experience of living in the scheme maybe your scheme was different or maybe it was just you they did not like....
When we were kids we could roam the whole estate play with who we liked and indeed go to school in the other gangs turf...
After dark it was different. you never ventured over the "Border" you knew the unwritten boundaries and never even went near them at night...

Nostalgia no....To be a kid again maybe....To do it differently absolutley not...

No one has a square go any more it's all shout stab shoot....
Only people with black eyes these days are fall over drunks...

I have lost a few good friends to this so called Knife culture...
One stabbed in the back by a 15 year old laddie at 3 am Walking home from work because the kid fell out with his girlfriend, two through drugs and myself i was slashed what was my crime...Opening a laywers door in Anniesland early one thursday morning and it would be a laugh to do it ....well it seemed funny to the wee fuckers that did it.... so don't you dare condemn me to rose tinted glasses.
If cheese gets mouldy you throw it out...
Why buy it mouldy in the first place ?

We should run our own gang - The Square Go Hidden Glasgow. I will nominate myself as interim leader. The chicks can be in it too, but have to wear matching shiny jackets.

Alas it would seem the first thing you have typed in a while that actually had any substance and made sense was indeed written by someone else....

But then you make a habit of posting pish....
also noted and quoted from another forum...
So I know it's not the first time you have heard it...

You start a topic with the sole intent of debasing any input from other users.
Forum troll's seem to be tolerated without merit. for every post you make that actually has some foundation and produces
a decent thought action from other users you seem to follow it up with uncanny ease by three other posts of no merit ...

You want to play kids games well try this one Mr St. Clair

Stick one finger in either side of your mouth pull tightly in opposite directions careful not to eject your wallies...
And say loudly...

"I AM A BANKER"

That about sums it up...

Mythology, legend and folklore of Glasgow

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Sat Jul 14, 2007 5:31 am

If you've been cyber stalking me you will notice that I take a particular interest in Glaswegians re writing history to make themselves appear better than contemporary Glaswegians. Their motto can be "Modern Life is rubbish" or it can be "when i was a ned I was still better behaved than today's neds".
And if I'm around when today's shell suited hooligan looks back on his trips to Victor Morris with affection I'll hope to point out his inadequate memory too. I do hope however that with today's improved education levels their responses will be at least amusing if not informative.

You've made no response to the case mentioned twice in this thread which suggest that nothing much has changed.

Btw your tales of furniture vans and daily break ins at Sunblest are of a level with jam jars being taken in lieu of cash at cinemas, Roy Rogers riding down the Maryhill Road and the tunnel under neath Bothwell Street.

Cyber stalking....Dream on your an old man talking pish !
Might it not be i visit the same places as you might troll as a visitor...
as for the case mentioned twice it would seem according to you the person who's first real input apart from cut n paste happened oh right about now.
As the judge indeed see's more of the violence of our city street's in his professional capacity do you really think he is a credible source of how bad it is ?
Day in day out he deals with our social problems on a scale far beyond the comprehension of the common man.
Do you think it might be a little possible this could skew his view a little ?

As for jam jars in lieu of payment at cinema's
Roy Rodger's on the maryhill Rd
I cannot comment as i am too young to remember any of this.

Bothwell street different story but you who art the fountain of knowledge already know the truth...

So we covered all the point's
except the radio station ....
1. the case
2 your reply ...
3. wipe your chin before you spout more pish.
If cheese gets mouldy you throw it out...
Why buy it mouldy in the first place ?
