This is something I've always wondered about. I knew that the Yorkhill section joined onto the GCR section at some point, but was never very sure about exactly where this took place.

My initial thought was that it joined onto the GCR somewhere along the disused Kelvinbridge - Finnieston section, but after walking that line I never found any evidence of a connecting tunnel before it joined onto the live tracks at Finnieston (as is seen in the second image posted by James73).

It makes much more sense that the electrified Partick - Exhibition Centre - Argyle St tunnel section was built atop/amongst the old Yorkhill section.

The pic below shows the current layout. The old Finnieston to Partick Central
(Yorkhill) tunnel is mostly in use, apart from where the new section burrows
in to the Yorkhill portal.

From the Evening Times

PLANS for a massive supermarket in Glasgow's west end could hit the
buffers because of a disused railway line.

Shopping giant Tesco wants to build a huge store on vacant land between
Beith Street and the railway line close to the bottom of Byres Road.

The development by the UK's biggest supermarket firm would also include
six blocks of flats to accommodate 1300 students and a leisure centre.
But the scheme has attracted a storm of protest from local people worried
about possible disruption caused by the enormous project.

Now Strathclyde Passenger Transport has warned it may veto the plan as
the development takes in land which could be needed for future rail
expansion.

SPT chairman Alistair Watson said legislation gave the transport authority
the power to veto applications which involved railway land.

He said: "I have asked my officers to look at this development and see
whether or not we might want to retain the route for future light rail use.
SPT will consider very carefully whether we want to protect the line and
we have the statutory power to do that."

Partick councillor Aileen Colleran has been inundated with complaints from
local residents unhappy about having the superstore on their doorsteps.
And today she said she welcomed the investigation being carried out by
SPT: "This is just another reason why this development will not work.

"This is a monster building which will dominate the skyline for miles
around. There is a lot of anxiety in the area about this plan because many
residents think it is a done deal, but it is far from being a done deal."

Ms Colleran started a petition against the Tesco scheme and within an hour
had collected more than 100 signatures from visitors to the Partick farmers
market.

The petition will be presented to members of the city council's planning
committee.

She added: "Another concern about this development is it is on the banks
of the Kelvin and does not respect the natural beauty of the riverside."

Save it for the railway, theres plenty of other derelict land in the city :? We have no idea how much railways might be needed in the future.

Presumably these future rail expansion plans are already stuffed due to the lowering of the Clydeside Expressway for Glasgow Harbour, which results in the concrete box tunnel under the expressway to be filled in, severing the link for any future rail line between the site Tesco wants and the old L&D alignment past Glasgow Harbour.

In any case, the most recent proposals (on Glasgow Harbour website) show a tram line sticking to the south of the expressway.

Was there a tunnel laid under the Clydeside Expressway when it was built, for use if the rail network ever expanded?

The Harbour web site does show a rail/tram link to the station at the SECC, running south of the Expressway.

Although I'm not in favour of the upcoming constructions on the site, I must say that I won't weep for the loss of the scrap yard buildings. They were nothing but a haven for Buckie drinking yobs and dossers.

I'd be interested to see if any remains of Partick "castle" are upturned during the next few months. I won't hold my breath.

I've uploaded some images of it to d.s, including some of the (far more interesting) adjoining Yorkhill railway tunnel:

The link doesn't work for me. Can you post some of the yorkhill pics here?
