Employment of woman drivers by the GCT was sporadic over the years, at times there was a complete ban on taking on any new ones.
The GCT, which was better than many employers, did have some quite harsh rules regarding women, this is from a 1969 rulebook.

42. Pregnancy - A conductress who becomes pregnant will not be allowed to continue in the service of the Department, and must immediatly intimate her resignation.
No Sick Pay will be granted for absence due to pregnancy.

Just how many times did they paint those buses? They must have doubled their weight with the layers of paint.
I see some of the 'A' Ailsa buses are still on the go.... those were real bone shakers with the drivers cab exiting to the right via a slide door and a big black grill on the front....

I remember seeing some with front bumpers like that. What were they in aid of?

I love that livery. Never seen it on an Atlantean before, but I do remember a few Metrobuses* painted in a similar scheme. They also had nice coach-style sheets.

If you look closely you can see the type of seats I was talking about in the lower deck. Didn't a couple have them upstairs as well?

Generally buses were simply recoated, they were not stripped. My old bus was never stripped, and still carries every coat of paint it's ever had, including the original GCT colours.




That livery is known as Strathclyde coach livery, it was applied to several buses used on tours & coach hires. As you said some buses were upgraded even more, hence the coach seating fitted to the Metrobuses. Some hires would venture into England, so bus seats wouldn't do (too harsh on the arses).



The Firestone H.E.L.P. bumpers were fitted to 6 Atlanteans as an experiment, obviously not too successfully, or cost effective, as they were never used again.
Atlanteans, especially the early models were always vunrable in the event of an accident, above the chassis, all that stands in the way of the driver and another vehicle, is two layers of fibreglass and a few bits of small machinery & framework.

In the 1960's dual door buses were all the rage in the UK bus industry. Glasgow got it's first one in 1968. The idea was passengers would enter by the front door, and leave by the centre.

Despite operating very successfully in cities such as Edinburgh, & London, the dual door idea was hated by the Glasgow public. All buses with them were all converted to single door by 1979.
