Glasgow Green

I was down there the other day, i there is probably alot that could be said about Glasgow Green. I took a few quick photos, peoples Palace, Glasgow Green Station, templeton carpet factory...

This will probably feature as a hidden glasgow project at some point so if anyone has any photos etc..!!

Also when was Glasgow Green Station last used??

Well... not Glasgow Green related per say, but I took the pic from there so as good a place as any!

I noticed the hands have been taken off the clock faces of the Merchants Steeple, does anyone know ifthe plan to restore the mechanism and get it working again?

When I was studying archaeology at Glasgow a few years ago, the commercial arm of the department (GUARD) were contracted by the council to do some geophysical surveys of the Green to determine whether anything remained underground that they should be aware of, particularly with regards to WWII air raid shelters.

The results were quite interesting, as they not only produced fairly clear plans of the shelters, but also discovered the infilled remains of a swimming pool, started in 1939 but never finished.

funny you say that about the swimming pool, my grandad swore there was gonna be one, and felt like a bit of an eejit when we told him he was talking mince.

he used to use the park with all the fitness stuff with regularity.

Station closed to passengers on 2nd November 1953, long before the rest of the Glasgow Central Low Level system, it had also been closed as a wartime economy measure between the 1st January 1917 and 1st June 1919. Trains stopped running throught the closed station on 5th of October 1964 until the line was reopened on the 5th November 1979.
The bulk of the station was demolished as part of the GEAR program but the facade is protected as a grade "A" listed building. There are pictures already on the HG site at http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/rail/glasgowgreen.htm but I expect you all have seen these.

A little known fact is that the clothes market which became known as Paddy's Market was originally based on the Green. This from the 1870's.

Something I didn't know till tonight - in 1941, the tidal weir at Glasgow Green partially collapsed after being overwhelmed by heavy rains:



I probably don't know the park as well as I should, but is the ampitheatre visible in both these aerial shots still there?

The amphitheatre is long since gone unfortunately. The middle picture seems to date from the very early nineteen-sixties. Beside the river on the south side there is a large construction site where it appears the foundations are being laid for the multi-storey flats at Waddell Court off Ballater Street. The Basil Spence monstrosity on the other side of Ballater St. [eventually demolished in 1993] is yet to be built.

I noticed that as part of the European upgrade at Glasgow Green
a new feature park has been created around the war memorial on The Green,It is called'Dassie Green'It has a new sign and entrance from Greenhead Street.
Anyone know were this name comes from,Other names of areas on Glasgow Green,the Drying Green,easy enough to explain that one but what about Slaters Haugh any Ideas?
Are there anymore areas within the Glasgow Green.

The map of the green in Elspeth King's book (The People's Palace and Glasgow Green, 1985) shows Fleshers' Haugh and McPhun's Paek/ Daisy Green as the only two 'sub-parks'. Good book, by the way.

Yes, they moved the McLellan Arch from the foot of Charlotte Street to the site of Jail Square, opposite the High Curt building. It originally stood in Ingram Street.
