Cinema City - new exhibition, Lighthouse, 9 - 20 June

Postby nodrog » Fri May 27, 2005 11:34 am

During Hollywood’s golden era, Glasgow was home to over 130 cinemas – more than any other city outside America. They could accommodate anything from 400 to 4,000 film fans and their design boasted influences from Art Deco to European Modernism. This exhibition celebrates Glasgow’s historic reputation as Cinema City and explores the internal and external architecture of its city centre ‘Picture Palaces’ from both yesteryear and today.

A bit more info on this event:

" The exhibition will be running from the 9 – 20 June, there is an entry charge of £3 to the building but that will give you entry to all the exhibitions including our Mackintosh Interpretation centre.

We will be running cinema city walks around the city centre as part on the exhibition, these are FREE of charge and will take place:

1pm Sunday 12 June
1pm Sunday 19 June
The tour lasts approx 1 hour 30 minutes"

there was a feature about this exhibitionon reporting scotland last night (June 7) Quite a few archive pics of old cinemas...no sign of nodrog though I kind of expected him to pop up.

Nope, nothing to do with me I'm afraid - though the nice chap organising it has been in touch with me about it.

The website for the booklet this exhibition is based on can be found here:

Having been along this Sunday, the cinema tour has the official Nodrog Cinema Seal of Approval.

If you're planning on going next Sunday, don't pay your £3 to get into the lighthouse to see the actual exhibition first like I did; they offer to let you in for free for a look after the tour!
