Underground Operating Theatre - Cowglen Hospital

Postby Sharon » Tue Mar 26, 2002 3:57 pm

> There is also an underground operating theatre at the old Cowglen Hospital which was used during WWII. If you walk around the grounds of Cowglen you will find a very unique plaque presented to the hospital from the American Army Medical Corp who were based at Cowglen during the war. Maybe worth a picture/mention on the site.

I went out to Cowglen hospital, to discover that the place is getting
knocked down! I spoke to a couple of guys still working the laundry,
they said that the plaque is being moved to the Southern General. To
be mounted on a small cairn there. They also gave me a little more
info...

The hospital was used by the military until 1962, it was the disused
till '66 when the health board took over. And was opened again in '67
as a geriatric and chronic sick childrens hosptial.

Sadly the underground operating theatre has been filled in or bicked
up for many years now. Interesting though.

Does anyone know anything more about this, or even better does anyone have any photographs!??
