Ivor Cutler

Postby mrlipring » Thu Mar 31, 2005 5:00 am

I only found out about Ivor Cutler very recently, and i'm wondering who else has heard of him. I'm kinda expecting a flood of people to post, having read this AGHAST that i'd never heard of him. I just kinda get the feeling that he's one of these guys that those in the know KNOW, and expect everyone else to. Also, i've got a knack of overlooking these things. And i've got a shit memory. Just that the guy seems like he should be a bloomin' legend. He probably is, it'll be me, but ANYWAY, i'm half asleep and rambling.

For those who haven't heard of him (and there have to be some, c'mon) he's.. Well, he's a hit and miss genius, and i'm incapable of describing him properly.

This guy has given it a go, but to understand what Ivor's all about, you've gotta listen to some of his songs and stories...

80 metre race
I had a longer version of this, i'll have to find it again

There's also two documentaries about him on bbc4 on the 15th of april. Looking forward to 'em. Here's hoping my DVB-T card doesn't decide to go on the wonk again. Well, it'll have been MCE2005, but anyway...

How can you have avoided Ivor!!!

I used to have a tape - yup a tape, it was along time ago... in fact i wonder if i still have it?

I have a vague recollection of a Scottish father teaching his son...

"Look son, a tree"

and so on... (why thats the line i recall i dont know... )

So many great wee lines.

"Hurry up Ivor, you big twit!"

"What an arresting voice"

"Why it's Big Jim. Hello Big Jim..."

That's all from one poem.

And of course, he's one of the best things in "Magical Mystery Tour"

He's been old forever hasn't he? He's certainly old in 1967...

Just read the bio you posted... I didn't actually know a great deal about him and am now glad I know a little more.

He seems to be a pretty cool guy. He must be ancient now...

Ivor Cutler. One of the things that makes life worth living. He is about 83 now. Was raised in a flat on Pollokshaws Rd as a small child. One of the stories concerns him falling in Queen's Park boating pond and nearly dieing. I had the pleasure of seeing him at gig on Glasgow Green about 12 years ago. The Fopp fiver CD's are a must.

I first heard of Ivor Cutler in the early ninties. Danny Baker used to play alot of his stuff and that's where I heard it first.

I think my favourite is called My Next Album, which off the top of my head goes something like this,

A bird was flying in the air
I grabbed it's boney foot between my finger and my thumb but didn't realise it was an eagle.
Eagle! Bring back my hand, bring back my hand that you snapped at the wrist.
"No" he said "I'm an eagle, did you really expect a different reply" I said "No"
"Alright! Here's your stupit hand, my fledlings have all your LP's, there really big fans"
I said "Thanks a lot eagle"
"Tell your kids I'll put them on my next album".
