My father worked for Glasgow health board and used to take me to play golf in Leverndale golf course. The patients used to go for walks around the course, and it was a strangly surreal experience while waiting to play your approach shot, to see an expressionless, gowned figure slowly walk across the green. Fond memories. I hope this is not too far off topic, but I never even knew leverndale was 'no more'.
'Care' in the community I guess.

Inside the tower

Postby glasgow987654 » Mon Apr 18, 2005 10:02 pm

Hi,

Afetr speaking to one of the security gaurds he let me have a look inside the old tower. Nothing remains of the the inside workings however there is still part of a staircase the would have taken you up to the large hall. Parts of the old green tiles are still in place and the foundation stone can be seen from the road side. There is also quite a gap between the floor level of the tower and ground level and cant figure out if there would have been a basement underneath.

There was a camp across Crookston Road from the gate, around Crookston Castle. It was occupied first by the British and then the American armies. The latter lived in comparative luxury with refrigerators and things and caused a certain amount of sensation locally, not least when a black baby was reported in Nitshill! I used a home-brew radio to benefit from their medium wave transmitter, which relayed AFN (American Forces Network). One of the largest vehicles I ever saw was a transporter of theirs which had to go over to the right of Paisley Road West to make a left into Crookston Road. Some time after D-day the Americans left, leaving much stuff behind. Then to retrieve it, several weeks later, they sent back a team. It did not find much

I went to school near Leverndale, sometimes we would hear a loud hooter going off, we were told it meant that a lunatic had escaped. Dont know if that is true.

My Gran lived near Dykebar in Paisley and we occasionally heard a siren and a similar story was told so it's very possible that it's true

I'm told that if an inmate did escape the first thing the authorities would do is seal off Paisley on the grounds that if a loony got in there they'd never find him.

Maybe the siren was someone escaping from Paisley, you could hardly blame them

Surely the City Chambers are still there?

I lived not too far from Hawkhead, and remember vividly as kids in the 50s going up there and trying to get in just to see what it was like?
Been over 50 years so methinks it may have changed?

I'd actually love to live on the old grounds....

Upon playing up there in my younger years, i found the hole place fascinating!

I love everything to do will ruins, castles etc so i would go up there mostly everyday
(obviously it was very dangerous) But i just loved to look around the place for hours on end.
In & out of all the rooms, wondering what each would have been used for etc....

I can definately say i believe the place to be haunted, based on a good few number of things i've witnessed
and heard while creeping about the buildings.

I wish i would have taken photos at the time as its something i cant go back and do now :(

I'd love to see some old photos of the place, if i can find any! :D

PS...please note - i was not a ned vandal as others have said,
i never in anyway tried to destroy the place and hard to believe but all
things like old buildings, ruins etc really intrest me and that was my only purpose for
visiting the polace time & time again :P

This is exactly how i remember the place!

Im too young to remember it ever being in use, i just remember it how it is in these photos!

I used to prowl around the buildings just fascinated by it all!

Thanks for the up-load, good to see some photos 8)
