Gorbals - Abbotsford Place

Postby War Baby » Sun Aug 26, 2012 5:05 pm

In 1911, my grandmother, Eveline Holmes, born 1893, lived at 63 Abbotsford Place, Gorbals. She went to school in that area, and I know for a fact that there was a school in Abbotsford Place, which was still standing in the 1970's.

I suspect that these is a good chance that she went to that school. Can anyone tell me what was the number Abbotsford Place School, so that I can see how near to number 63 it was?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A second question about Abbotsford Place... My grandmother was living with the Wilsons at number 63, and Jessie Wilson had a tobacconist shop. She was said to be a tobacconist shopkeeper. I would love to find out the exact address of that tobacconist's shop - does anyone know how it could be traced?

I think the school was at 129 Abbotsford Place.
I remember the tobacconist and going past it but not exactly where it was, sorry.

Yeah! That makes me pretty sure she went to that school.

That shop owned by Jessie Wilson might have been there a long time. Just wondering when you remember
seeing a tobacconist shop in the area.... ?

It would have been the mid 60's.
By the early 70's most of the shops and tenements in Abbotsford palce were empty and awaiting demolition.

Yes that part I do understand my esteemed HG contributor however this man seems to have had the foresight to photograph on a much greater scale than your average "take a picture of me standing at the close" bod.
I just wondered if he was professional ie employed by a newspaper ?

It is interesting that your grandmother stayed with Wilsons at No 63 Abbotsford Place as a William Wilson of that address, Commission Agent, signed the death Certificates in 1859 of Mungo Morton Muir and his infant son, Morton Muir - the first as 'nephew' and the second as 'cousin'. The Muirs lived in Cumberland Street in the Gorbals. I spent all day yesterday without success trying to find this William Wilson in the 1861 Census at 63 Abbotsford Place, but he is listed there in the Glasgow Postal directories for several years around that time. 63 Abbotsford Place is given as his house address and 25 Gordon Street, Glasgow as his business address.
I wonder if you know any more about Jessie Wilson and any other members of her family? I realise that the dates which interest you are much later but I am desperate to find more details about this William Wilson, particularly the names of his parents and his dob, as he may be the missing link between two branches of the Wilson family, mine and that of John Wilson (aka Christopher North of Blackwood's Magazine, born in Paisley) which I have been seeking for simply ages. Regards, Val

The pictures in the previous posts are amazing. I used to live at 14 Devon Street and i attended Abbotsford School.
This was in the 1950s. We left for Australia in 1959.
