Another milestone reached today. Brake lines in and bled and all the body bolts fitted. The body is now in place and wont be coming off again until the next restoration.

I have ordered up a very large batch of seals from California to do the doors and body panels. At over $500 worth there better be every seal I could ever need for the car in the order.

Next jobs on the list will be getting the wheels back and fitting the glass while Ed and Johnny fix and paint the doors, wings, bonnet and deck lid.

I don't know if I'd have the bottle to take that out on our roads after the amount of effort, money and love that's went into restoring this. Especially our roads!

Unfortunately its not my choice as its not my car but I am sure SWMBO will be very careful with it when she gets it.

So, when finished, what percentage of it will be the original car?

My maths and quantity surveying skills are not up to giving a percentage but the chassis is original(with new floor pans added) and apart from the sills the body will be original. The gearbox, doors, engine lid, steering column and steering box along with the fuel tank and interior (re-covered) are all original.

It's so clean and straight underneath, it actually looks like a tiltshift of a die-cast model.

Beautiful.

Cheers Doorstop.

Tonight's update is short but it does contain an important detail that you must remember when starting a large scale restoration on a car.

Pricing up the welding and paint before the job is the bit that nobody misses. Pricing up an interior, well, that depends how good your interior is to start with and then you look at whats left in the pot and maybe price up some nice extras.

The bit of the process that is VERY easy to forget to do is the pricing up of the small bits. The boring bits. The bits you didnt know existed until they fall apart when taking them off.

This is where we are tonight with the box of bits that arrived from Germany today.

Image

Door seals, scrapers, light seals, hinge seals, check strap seals, wiper grommets, bonnet seals, deck lid handle seals and the list goes on until you reach the bottom of the 3 page invoice and it all adds up to over £500 8O

90% of the parts in this box, nobody will ever see but are completely necessary to stop leaks and rattles.

Also in the post today, complete rear tail light assemblies;

Wallet is taking a beating but we are getting there.

Fester was pushed across the yard yesterday for a picture. Look closely;

Image

Wheels are not yet ready. Due to a paint reaction they all need re-done but will hopefully be back next week.

Update time, I was down at Ed's on Sunday to get a bit more done.

As it was a nice day, we pushed it out into the sun to get work done;

Image

There was a specific job needing done. When I was dismantling the car way back at the start to do the nearside sill I had the problem of what to do with the wiring loom that runs along the inside on the floor.

I could either try and feed the wires through a very tight space in the rear 1/4 panel or make a clean cut straight through and worry about it later.

On Sunday "later" finally arrived and it had to be dealt with. This is why I employed the skill of none other than my Dad.

Image

He builds model locomotives and is a dab hand with a soldering iron so I set him to work soldering the 10 wires back together. I knew he would have the attention to detail to do it right as this was the last project he finished for himself;

Image

I wasnt wrong, the finished job looks like it came from the factory;

Image

While he was working I stripped down the near side door;

Image

Johnny the painter has been prepping wings;

Image

And to finish off the day, Ed and myself got the windows in the shell;

Image

Image

Quick advert; This is the email address for Joanne's website, have a look and if you want to treat the special person in your life to some handmade jewellery for christmas get in touch and mention where you saw the address for an extra special deal and help the Fester re-build fund;

Todays update is another example of something that sounds like a quick job turning into a full days task.

Paint the back of the new bumpers and the old bumper irons, thats all.

First part was finding the old bumpers and removing the irons. Of course they were seized on so the bolts needed cut and then with the bumper irons off it was obvious that time had taken a toll on them.

Image

They are not dead but as they are made from 2 bits of flat steel the join line eventually gets water inbetween the layers, rust sets in and the layers separate. Once bolted back on the car its not a big problem but I thought I could make them better.

Cleaned off the paint, clamped them in the workbench and ran weld along the top edge.

Image

Quick tickle with the flap disk and the top edge of the iron looks like one piece;

Image

Just the other three left to do and then I have the full set;

Image

With that done I could get on with what I had planned to do and get things painted;

Image

Image

I was short of inner bumper supports so I need to order up a couple, paint the inside of the new over riders and order new number plates before I can re-assemble the bumpers but that will be the next job on the list.

This is a great project to follow. By the way your Dad was a great supporting act - that engine - WOW!!!
On a more mundane point. What are the paperwork requirements to get it on the road. e.g. will a normal MOT suffice, will a new registration document be required, or do you keep the old reg. number. It would be interesting to know. Thank you, Bob.

Cheers. No extra paperwork needs to be done, just needs MOT'd once the work is finished.
Beetles have a separate chassis so as long as the centre back bone is not modified its the same car. On a monocoque car, replacement of the sills and floor is allowed but to modify any parts of the monocoque requires a BIVA test similar to a kit car.

My Dad had been building a huge collection of 00 gauge stock, mostly kit and scratch build but 2 years ago decided to sell it all and switch to 0 gauge. If Im round at theres I will get some pictures of current projects, Im sure there is a 2-6-4 tank engine and a 4-4-0 cali tank engine on the work bench.

Another bit of the jigsaw collected today when I went for the freshly powder coated wheels and took them to get balanced.

Image

You will notice the lack of weights on the wheel rim. I got the guy balancing the wheel to use sticky weights on the inside of the wheel.
