Just downloaded Muriel Spark's "The Driver's Seat" after hearing it discussed on "A Good Read" on Radio 4 this afternoon. Surprised to find myself agreeing with Niall Fergusson on RLS - am I going soft or is he not as bad as he thinks he is?

Finished "The Driver's Seat", I think it's Spark's strangest novel and was rather unsettling.

Smashing choice, Banjo .. I've got all three of his books.

Reading "Sunset Song" for the first time in ages, it's still brilliant. I note that the recent film version is now out on DVD -it's good.

'Watching the English - the hidden rules of English Behaviour' by Kate Fox. A fascinating social anthropological study of what we do and why we do it. Written in simple words rather than psychobabble. Most of it would apply to us north of the border  '

Plodding through Siegfried Sassoon, Soldier, Poet, Lover Friend - Life in One Volume by Jean Moorcroft Wilson.
Obviously knew him from his war poems and his bravery in WWI but I can't say he comes over in this book as the most likeable of characters all the time.
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.

Two crackers for Christmas: "Glasgow, the Autobiography" edited by Alan Taylor and "Glasgow in 1901" (reprint) by James Hamilton Muir.
Both highly recommended.

"Betrayal" by Anthony Riches.

First book in "The Centurions" trilogy of historical military fiction set in the 1st century AD, from the author of the "Empire" series.
Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.
