CAMBUSLANG STONE FACE

Postby Botanic Squirrel » Wed Sep 25, 2013 10:22 am

Hi Everybody, nice to be back. :)

I'm writing a series of autobiographical comic strips based on my childhood in Cambuslang and wondered if anyone can help me out. I remember a story of a boulder in Cambuslang Park that had a girl's face carved on it, and I even have a vague memory of seeing it at some point.

The 'Friends of Cambuslang Park' website has this snippet:

In the park there is a carving of a girl’s face. The story is that the girl fell and was killed. Her father was so bereft that he carved her image in the rock. If you have any information, photographs of the face or stories please get in touch with us and we will add it to the page.

May 2009 - Some information has come to us regarding the carving. The story was told that the girl was playing tennis and that she went to retrieve the ball, fell over and was killed. The carving was apparently quite new in 1930.

Does anyone know where exactly it is in the park, the true story behind it? Pics would be nice.

More generally, any pics of Cambuslang from the 1970s and 80s would be gratefully appreciated, especially of old 60s-designed Precinct.

Thank you.

I seem to recall it was up towards the Greenlees Rd/Western Rd side of the park - been years since I last saw it though. It was in a wee walled structure that looked like a well I think.

As for pics of the precinct, I've a few postcards, will scan and stick them up here shortly.

I presume you've seen Ed Boyle's site with its pages of old pics?

Pics much appreciated, guys, thank you!

I have no memory of the 'well' around the stone face so I guess that must have been added after my time.

The precinct I remember very well. Ed Boyle's site is a great resource.

I remember my favourite toyshop, John Brownlees, was just off the left side of this pic.

I've not been back to Cambuslang since I left in the 90s, but using streetview I have to say that what they replaced the precint with looks pretty horrible. :(

Got my first train set from Brownlee's - a Lima Deltic Inter-city set!

The new Main Street has indeed been a bit of a failure - seems they learned nothing from the 60s. A new pub, The Cambus, was built round the back facing a miserable car park and most of the small units on the Main Street itself have never been occupied in the six or so years since it was built.

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers Brownlees, gap74. JB was my go-to man for Airfix stuff.

( And by weird coincidence, I just watched Harold & Maude the other night... )

Was the Handy-Hut that wee kiosk thing at the top of the Precinct stairs? I remember I used to get Jubilees and Sherbet Dabs there when I was a kid.

A word to the wise about the original location of the face. (and my memory from the late 1940s). It was carved on a natural flat-surface stone outcrop someway down the grassy slope, behind this recently built ugly path memorial.
