Right.

So what are we going to do about this? Do we moan about it on here or should we try and do something about it? There's enough of us here with an interest to form some sort of group to maybe try and put some pressure on the council to do something about this so it doesn't happen again. At the very least we can try and get this more in the public eye and maybe help to build some pressure on the council.

Something needs to be done before this site has to be renamed "Lost Glasgow".

True, but it's apathy that has allowed the council to get away with demolishing these buidlings. It's time we got off our asses. Before the whole of Glasgow is a glass-fronted car park with no redeemin features whatsoever.

Not shouting about this has meant the council has been able to demolish at least two valuable buidlings this year at least.

Not the point you were making, I know. But I think it's high time a lot of people starting shouting about this. Otherwise they'll just keep doing it.

The Lion Chambers in Hope Street will be next. Just wait and see...

Not to worry folks you won't be able to see any buildings as you whizz by on this if it gets the go ahead.

No need to go all the way to Shanghai Mr Watson, just watch that episode of The Simpsons where they built a mono-rail thingy and learn :!:

a 260mph monorail link between the city centre and the west end.... what a waste of fuckin money, my money, our money, on a service most of us will not actually use.

and what about the train service? almost every destination they mentioned other than the "harbour" already have rail links!!

we are not a cosmopolitan city in the same sense as paris milan london or new york, and neither can we afford to spend money on services that goes with such an image when there are so many other problems on our door step to begin with.

Give me half a million quid and I'll drink myself to death - that way, I'm
no longer a burden on the city...

I would imagine the decision to knock the building down would depend on a number of factors :-
    1) The true extent of the damage to the remaining structure. This was an intense fire and the heat will almost certainly written off much of the shell to the extent it would need to be taken down and rebuilt stone by stone.
    2) The cost of rebuilding in its original form
    3) What money was available and from where. I would very much doubt if this was insured on a reinstatement basis.
    4) If insurance funds were insufficient, then who would pay for the rest of the work - politicians and Historic Scotland can answer that one.

Like everyone else I'm sorry to see the building go, but nor would I want to see it made safe and then left to deteriorate as a hollow shell.

Some sensible comments and questions being asked (though not terribly forceably) in this ET article from today:

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5034029.html

it was "very regrettable" that in Glasgow demolition rather than shoring up and preservation was often the first option.

Hah.

Oh look, 25 councillors in the planning development applications committee to be investigated for misconduct, how shocking....
