Right, I have no recollection of any of these Arcades! But...

It says on one of those sites you've linked to that the Wellington Arcade itself a continuation of Wellington Street. So if you come up Wellington Street to Sauchiehall Street, the building right in front of you is M&S. Is it possible you can't recognise the buildings because they're not there any more?

Here's a map, with the arcades marked, running through to West Russell Street (which was later changed to Wemyss Street).

http://www.theglasgowstory.com/valmapview.php?id=16

Out of interest, where was the old Woolworths? I know there's the remains of one at the far end of Renfrew Street, because I walk past it every day. Was this just storage for the larger store?

From memory, Woolworths' in Renfrew Street would pretty well have been straight across the road from the Camp Bar. There was a bus stop right outside it, serving both Corpy and Alexanders Buses as we used to often catch the Corpy 20 or Alexander's 105 from there to 'theDrum' !

I seem to remember that you could also walk right through the Woolworths' and into the next street but I can't remember the name of that street.

I also vaguely remember walking through an arcade from Suchiehall Street to Renfrew Street but these are the memories of a ten year old child who left Glasgow for Australia in December, 1960.

Just had a look at the NLS geo-referenced maps and the arcades were pretty simple to find on the 1892-94 OS Map of Glasgow.
(As usual click on the link and use the slider to change the level of transparency of the overlay to switch between the old map and the current google map)

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=55.86555&lon=-4.25886&layers=B000000000FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

The Wellington Arcade is a continuation of Wellington Street from Sauchiehall Street to Renfrew Street and the Queen Arcade is a continuation of the Wellington Arcade from the opposite side of Renfrew Street to Russell Street according to this map they also had a pub at either end handy!

Closest I could get to the Sauchiehall Street entrance to the Wellington Arcade on GSV

Virtual Mitchell image from 1938 post-absorption by Woolworths I am assuming the entrance is to left of the parked car

Renfrew Street Entrance of Wellington Arcade

Renfrew Street Entrance of Queen Arcade

Possible side view of Queen Arcade and back exit of Woolworths

Possibly Renfrew Street entrance of Queen Arcade in the background of this one
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=17830&r=2&t=4&x=1

Back exit of the Queen Arcade on Wemyss Street?
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=10972&r=2&t=4&x=1

Also marked on the map in that area is a Royal Arcade located at the top of Hope Street opposite the Theatre Royal and leading to Cowcaddens Street

Entrance to Royal Arcade 1906

The maps and pics are brilliant - the only problem with them is you side tracked and they throw up all sorts of other questions.
The name Savoy is on the first one in Sauchiehall St area - didn't know the name existed prior to the modern shopping centre.

My memories of the Queen Arcade is of a dark and spooky entrance at Renfrew St, smelly, dark corners and unattractive shops. I found out years later from family stories that an old uncle of mine used to be a frequent customer in the only tearoom in the arcade, which was owned by a German woman. Love to see pics of that. :D

Cracking links there, penguinmonkey. There's another 2 hours of my life gone on look at maps and old photies!

Bridie, the Savoy mentioned is the Savoy Theatre. See here for more information
http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/Glasgow/Savoy.htm

Thanks for the info regarding the site of Woolworths. I was born long after all these things were reduced to rubble, so it's nice to be able to build up a picture about where everything was back in the day - especially as I live in Garnethill now, so I'm trying to get an idea of how the Cowcaddens area would have looked in times past.

Scratch that story about a tearoom run by a german woman in the Queen Arcade, my mother got it wrong - it was further up in Garscube Rd. Don't think there was ever a tearoom in the Arcade - or was there? :D anyone know?

Thanks SRB I didn't know about the Savoy Theatre. Old maps are fascinating.
Garnethill's an area I'm very familiar with - I take it you're acquainted with Streapadair's pics from the 70's i was just looking at them today again and every time I'm gobsmacked at how we took some of the old buildings for granted. The ones that are now demolished. :D

I only remember the Savoy because when I worked in the Old Athaeneum, they had prints of all the old theatres around the bar, and I used to read them whilst waiting for the interval!

And I didn't know about Streapadair's photos - however, thanks to the magic of google, I do now! Thanks for that! Brilliant stuff.
