Postby Fossil » Mon Mar 22, 2004 10:08 pm

Following on from the Who’s been in taggart Topic
Does anyone remember these people from TV’s yesteryear Scotland only
mind!

Bill Knox Crime Desk- He always talked about how Neds had broken in to somewhere and stole something or other. I think it was the first time I had ever heard the term Ned used. (Can you see Kristy Young saying that?)

John Toye Newsreader on STV he always had a grin.

Thingamijig ( Is that the right spelling?) it had Jack McLaughlin
as The Laird of Cowcaddens. Scottish country and western show yeeeee haaaaa

Late Call 11.00pm most night’s

Weirs Way which does appear on STV very late/early mornings

High Living: Soap opera in flats. From the 70’s

Bring on the rest…….

Bill Knox also presented a programme i think was called "Bill Knox's Tales of Terror" about gruesome crimes of the past that had happened in Scotland. It was set in an empty studio with Bill talking to camera. For some reason whenever i saw "crimedesk" Neds were stealing 7 foot reels of telephone cable and there was always photos of expensive antiques that had been blagged. One of my mates has a brilliant John Toye story but in all fairness it is his for the telling.

P.S. What about Mary Marquis !.

What was the baldy guys name , his boss ? He was funny sometimes. I think a lot of it was filmed in a pub called the bank in queen st..i think , i was in it years ago ...only because somebody said this is where...etc etc

Lay off Tom Weir tho .. i do constant nightshifts and have grown to accept he's a wonderful and colourful dresser...:) he can't be all bad if he wears a hat that silly.

Indeed it does Mod Foss, in fact it's on in about 10 mins so I'll be outa here to go and watch it. Better not be that often repeated one about Mary Queen of Scots being held captive in Inchmaholm Priory on the Lake of Mentieth, I swear I'll scream if it is.!! They always show that one.

It was "cheeky neds" that were always nicking JCBs from inside polis stations ... Bing Hitler did a great take-off on one of his albums.

Anybody read any of Bill Knox's crime novels? Bloomin' awful.

And who was the man who did the voice overs for the cardboard ads on STV? He also did continuity announcements. He had been a pantomime villain - he sure had the voice for it? Anyone remember him?

And is it true that STV stands for "straight to video"?

Was it Bryce Curdie or that Steve Hamilton.?
I've a belter of a story re: the former. It's got all the hallmarks of Classic Urban Myth allegedly*
I'll tell you's it in person as its not for repeating on here,

No, PGCC, it was an older man than that. Does the story involve an Accident and Emergency unit? If so, I've heard that tale told about the announcer I was thinking about.

(Quick Google) It was Clem Ashby (http://tv.cream.org/specialassignments/ ... dlocal.htm)

50 years of crap TV from Scotland

Postby stunev » Tue Mar 23, 2004 12:53 pm

Yes it's frightening - STV is 50 years old next year, when you'll see lots of fancy birthday graphics and newspaper ads and their cringe-making record of producing some of the worst television in Britain will be carefully whitewashed.

Of course now that all of ITV is equally bad STV's output blends in, but those of us who are almost as old as this awful broadcaster remember that when the rest of the network was producing stuff like Callan, Brideshead, The World at War and World in Action, STV were churning out daytime magazine shows with Isobel Begg and Glen Michael's Bloody Cavalcade and who can forget Garnock Way which came between High Living and Take the High Road.

By the way the music from High Living is called The Gonk and when he was presenting Thingumyjig Jack McLaughlan used to write his lines on the cuff of his shirt.
