Any final word on what happening with this building ?

Difficult to believe the roads around Bridgeton are even more appalling now. There's roadworks everywhere, was it too much of a stretch to postpone them until the unsafe building was sorted out ?

The bureaucracy must go on I suppose.

What is the point in closing the roads AGAIN to resurface them when you can resurface them when they are already closed?

And still the building teeters, and the road remains closed...

Word on the street is that the proprietors of the corner shop had removed some steel supporting beams during expansion of the shop

I also heard this and also heard that the owners have done a runner to Pakistan and don't have any intention of coming back here.

As of today, the road is still closed and nobody appears to be working on the site.

Information has arrived this morning from one of our councillors. If I were cynical, I might suggest he is reminding us of his name in the light of today's election. But anyway, the letter reads:

DANGEROUS BUILDING AT 2-8 LANDRESSY STREET AND 590-598 LONDON ROAD, GLASGOW

Further to our previous correspondence, I am writing to update you on the current position with regard to the above building.

The Dangerous Buildings Notice is now in default as the owners have not complied with the requirement to commence the necessary works to either repair or demolish the building.

The block on London Road and Landressy Street continues to show concerning signs of movement and deterioration since the evacuation in January 2012.

A letter was posted to the owners yesterday informing them that in the interests of public safety the Council now intends to proceed with the demolition of the property and seek to recover the expenses incurred in doing so. I anticipate that the works will commence in approximately one week's time.

I trust this is sufficient for your purposes at this time but if you require any further, blah blah...etc.

Thanks Dexter. I didn't know that site existed although I rather wish it didn't have to exist.

Dangerous building on London Road to be demolished

A tenement block on London Road is to be demolished after it was found to be in a dangerous condition.
Following evacuation of the buildings earlier in the year, owners of the block - which takes in 590-598 London Road and 2-8 Landressy Street - were served with a notice to either repair or demolish the building. That notice lapsed on 27 April, 2012.
Building control officers from the council have assessed the building again this week and have recommended that the only option left to maintain public safety is to demolish it. All owners have been informed of this decision by registered letter and the demolition will begin next week.
A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “The block on London Road and Landressy Street is in a very dangerous condition and continues to show concerning signs of movement and deterioration since the evacuation.
“While we are fully appreciative of the distress this decision may cause, we hope owners and tenants will understand that public safety is paramount and the demolition of the entire block is now essential.
“We expected that the process of demolition will begin next week. Roads will remain closed until the work is completed. We will endeavour to reopen London Road as soon as possible.”
In January, council officers were called in by people living in the tenement when large cracks appeared inside the building overnight. It was also found to have existing and extensive cracks elsewhere and there had been movement in the façade and internal structure.
Residents were evacuated for their own safety and London Road was shut while investigations were carried out. However the building has continued to show significant signs of continued movement and deterioration. As the block was in an unsafe condition, the council then informed residents and owners that a dangerous building notice was to be issued requiring repair or demolition.

I'd expect a big court case to happen because of this. Owner's claim somebody gave them permission. I'd like to know who.

I think traffic being able to move through the cross now is marvellous and should be kept that way instead of jist for taxis and buses.. its working just now... the building is supposed to come down this week... you can see movement in the stones

I walked round today and they've got a huge pile of earth pushed up against front of building and into the road. The damage has definitely got lots worse. More windows cracked and parts of balustrade missing now

The balustrade, some chimneys and part of the roof are gone

Image

There is a big pile of earth and tyres in the road to protect the railway tunnel underneath the road

Image

and I am afraid they have put something on the roof of the hideous boxy building next door to protect it - I was rather hoping it was coming down too...
