Fire in the wyndford

Postby kirstymaclaren » Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:02 pm

One of my friends said she saw a pretty bad fire in one of the wyndford high flats on Tuesday morning. I've looked online and can't find anything about this! Did anyone hear/see anything?

I live in one of these flats and out and about on Tuesday morning(9th), seen nothing of any fire bad or otherwise. Mind though there have been three in the past two years usually found to be caused by occupiers using free standing heaters coming into contact with flammables. These flats are very difficult to heat.

I take that the flats are the same as the cube ones up in broomhill...the ones there have a storage heater in the hall and living room, and a 2bar heater in the living-room too....few years ago they installed a fan heater in the bathroom, but the bedrooms are unheated and have been since they were built, but thankfully the days of cube are coming to an end and gha may be taking over....so on a plus they flats may get proper heating, but on a minus theyll get run down and be looked after poorly

The 2 bar would be a luxury, but 1 storage heater in the hall and 1 in the living room and thats yer lot although they did recently upgrade with modern versions of the same last year plus new kitchens, still shitty cold places to live in.

So no fire? She must have meant somewhere else but I'm sure that's where it must have been as she was near the health centre. I'll have to ask her!

Was woken in the early hours this morning with the noise of the smoke alarm going off, was equally alarmed with the immediate realisation that the smoke was in the room. Jumped out of bed like a crazy person as one does and ran round every possible source of ignition and soon realised it wasnt my flat, heard my nieghbours on the landing and went to join them to learn that the fire was in fact 4 floors below us on 14, by this time (03:15) hrs we were debating heading downstairs when we were met by fire fighter coming up who were able to reassure us that the fire though intense was already under control and it would be safer for us to stay where we were, all these guys were head to toe covered in blackened soot from the fire they had just been dealing with and perspiring heavily but still took the effort in their stride making sure everyone else in the building was ok and accounted for. I cant praise the proffesionalism enough of them and a brilliant job well done to the crews from Maryhill, Cowcaddens and Knightswood. No casualties from the fire thankfully but my next door neighbour was treated was for chest pains as a result of smoke inhalation.

Floors 14 and 13 are a mess both from the effects of the fire and flooding from the water used to extinguish it and the ground at the front of the building is strewn with glass and debri, as I am writing this (10:45) the fire brigade and police are still in attendance and both lifts have been switched off for safety reasons.

Cowcaddens crew?

My brother was on watch last night .. he'll have been there.

No need to check your wallets, he's reasonably house trained.
I like him ... He says "Okie Dokie!"

If it had not been for the party goers and then the fire crew who rescued us....I might not have been posting this!
I can still see and hear them in my memory and I hope I never forget the experience.
I have nothing but admiration for the members of our fire service.

So glad no-one was hurt.

Lucky man, busdriver …… and cheers for the news.

busdriver - only if you're comfortable with this suggestion - may I pass on your praise to the brigade, I'm certain the attending crews would very much appreciate it?

Every firefighter I know just gets on with their job, never anticipating a 'well done' from the public they serve, so spontaneous thanks like yours goes a long way to make up for the discomfort and effort they put into extinguishing fires like this.
You can take the man out of Maryhill, but you can't take Maryhill out of the man.

You're making me blush now, but, sure they deserve a 'pat on the back'

I hope those top two pictures are aberrations of camera usage and not building and/or construction issues !
