Kelvin Hall museums plan on track for £5m lottery funds




A scheme to turn Glasgow's Kelvin Hall into a cultural, research and training centre has been given initial approval for almost £5m of lottery funds.
The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a first round pass for the plan to create a safe home for Glasgow's city and university museum collections.
The city council said it would provide access to the city's cultural legacy.
The HLF also confirmed almost £4m in funds for the Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre.
The Kelvin Hall scheme would house a combined 1.5 million treasures from Glasgow'sKelvin Hall was home to the city's Museum of Transport, before it moved to its new home at the Riverside Museum.
The hall's international athletics track is also due to close with the opening of the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The Glasgow Club leisure facilities would remain at the site.
Councillor George Redmond, chairman of Glasgow Life, which runs arts, sport and leisure services for the city, said: "Glasgow is blessed with an abundance of cultural treasures and by working with our partner organisations, we now have an opportunity to safeguard these collections for future generations.
"At the heart of everything we do is a deep desire to ensure that the public can access their cultural legacy, investing in our shared heritage to increase knowledge and the city's reputation as a global cultural capital."
Prof David Gaimster, director of The Hunterian, said: "Kelvin Hall will deliver The University of Glasgow's strategic vision for The Hunterian as a leading global university museum service setting benchmarks in collections research, teaching, training and public engagement. This ambitious partnership between city and university is a first in the UK cultural sector."
Having been awarded a first round pass, the project now has up to two years to submit fully developed proposals for the grant of £4.8m
civic collection and from The University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery.

The millions of items they havent been able to display ... likes of the Ingram Tearooms that have been dismanteled and left in storage for many years is 1 example.



Its a massive site the Kelvin Hall, will be good to see this initiative come to fruit.

Glasgow Museums and Glasgow University Hunterian Museum are in the early stages of exploring a joint museum research centre and store as part of the redevelopment of the Kelvin Hall.


Glasgow Museums currently stores over 400,000 objects in a leased building in Maryhill. Conditions there are far from ideal, and public access to the collection is difficult.
Collections there include furniture and interiors, Glasgow history and archaeology. In addition, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed interiors of the Ingram Street Tearooms are cared for there. They are the only complete suite of original Mackintosh tearoom interiors to survive.
In creating a joint facility within the Kelvin Hall, an unprecedented level of access to the collection will be possible.
Combined with greater levels of collection care and research, this project would be the first of its kind between a university and a local authority-owned collection.
This project is running from 2010 to 2015 in partnership with Glasgow University Hunterian Museum​.

Only problem gcc will face is, if it becomes more successful and more visited than the riverside, itll be embarrassing for them, all that money for the dead duck by the river (pardon the pun)

i hope it does become more popular than the riverside, it'll teach the council to listen to the people rather implement their own self obsessed ideas of what the people want in this city. Really disapointed at the Riverside Museum.

Absolutely brilliant news, maybe they could do a mock up art deco cinema, a 100 seat facility like they had in the old transport museum to have shows and exhibitions, will be a great facility for all the archives they have at Hillington, really excited about this venture.

Cash to move Scottish Screen Archive to Kelvin Hall

Ministers have allocated £250,000 towards a project to move the Scottish Screen Archive to a new home at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow's west end.
The archive, which holds more than 100 years of film and video, is currently located in the city's Hillington area.
The planned move to a new cultural, research and training hub at the Kelvin Hall has been given initial approval for almost £5m of lottery funds.
It is hoped the move will allow greater public access to the film archive.
The National Library of Scotland has responsibility for the Scottish Screen Archive.
Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said the Scottish government's £250,000 would help move the collection to a more "fitting home".
"The SSA became part of the National Library of Scotland in 2006," she said.
"Since then, it has been based in a building on an industrial estate at Hillington with limited access for viewers and researchers.
"The Kelvin Hall development will be a fitting home and research centre for a fascinating collection of moving images portraying more than a century of Scotland's rich heritage."

Thanks Mori, that was very good. I would recommend the film as a must see for HG minded folk ( I even watched the end credits ).

I loved the bit about the lack of glazing at the rear of the room and kitchen trams: " these enabled people to smoke at the back and perhaps spit out of the window".

All delivered in a strange STV RP accent.

In the forties there was a large skating rink in the Kelvin Hall....
