Equally interesting is the older buildings to the south, and to the north. Dial House at bottom of Pitt Street still in situ but probably everything else is away, including the crescent (sorry, can't remember name - Bothewell Crescent maybe?) learing onto Bothwell Street!

Thanks for the pic yoker_brian, that is fascinating.

Superimposing that onto a modern view (this one is from Wikimapia), you can see what has happened since:

- Bothwell Circus has been wiped out by the J19 off-ramp from the M8, which is now a realignment of Bothwell Street

- Terrace Street is now underneath the Santander/Britoil Building.

- Bishop Street appears to be what is now the western access road into the Anderston Centre's undercroft, whilst Bishop Court is gone completely, underneath the Marriott car park.

Bothwell Circus existed alongside the Bothwell Street off-ramp, but with limited access:-

And Terrace Street isn’t underneath the Santander building:-

but disappeared along with Bothwell Circus in the early 1980s during the construction of that building.

That's what I was meaning...bad grammar on my part.

Further investigation shows that Bishop Street is what is now called Oak Street (this is the road that takes you up into the Marriott Car Park if you turn left, or into the bowels of the Anderston Centre if you keep going straight ahead) - but did Oak Street always exist, i.e it was merely a continuation of Bishop Street, or was it created during the building of the A.C or the Holiday Inn (as the Marriott originally was).

If you are going to count the Science Tower (127m), you really need to broaden your scope to all other man made structures. I believe the two tallest ever in Glasgow were both chimneys but have long since been demolished. At 454 feet (138m) the chimney built for J. Townsend at Port Dundas in 1857-9 was the highest, which saw off the more famous "Tennant's Stalk" at 436 feet (133m) which had been the tallest and was built in 1941-2 for Charles Tennant at his St Rollox works. Tennant's Stalk was dismantled in 1922s having been hit by lightning but I don't know when Townsend's was pulled down.

As anyone who owned a pushbike will tell you, it's downhill all the way from Springburn to Ruchill.
When I was a kid, the meteorological office regularly (I'm told) took readings at the flagpole in Springburn Park, which was the highest point in Glasgow.

I think people are getting confuddled between the highest point, and the tallest structure. All very confusing.

I think Lethamhill is higher than Springburn Park and the city boundary in the deep south is higher than either.

Fifty foot contours on my map!
Lethamhill - over 350 feet, under 400, part of the Provan, bought by the Town Council, circa 1670.
Springburn Park - over 300 feet, under 350.
Balgrayhill - 364 feet, Glasgow website.
Castlemilk - near 500 feet.

My faither used to say the same Josef - he was a great advocate of Alpine Springburn.

You can walk out of the gate at Springburn Park onto the new access road for Stobhill Hospital (Belmont Road*) without incline or decline, and straight on to the highest point of Balgrayhill Road

* Was there a Benmore Street at this site years ago?
