Firstbus are at it again....

For Monday this week, a public holiday, they ran a 'Special Sunday' service, which translates as 'guess when the bus is coming'.

Today I see notices saying that they will be revising the timetable of various bus services for 5 DAYS during the weekdays of the October school holidays. Must be more bother than it's worth, surely??

Probably to save money, run fewer buses, therefore less empty ones and less staff on, and not having to pay for a shift plus a lieu day...i worked mon lates and my last train had 3 people on it, also had 2 6cars that couldve run as 3s but were not allowed to de-strengthen trains unless theres a failed unit, was on one last night and the passenger count was

2 on at anniesland
2 on at kelvindale
2 off at maryhill
0 on at summerston/gilshochill/possilpark
3 on at ashfield

Grand total of £3.40 in sales ::): under TS and squire scotrail are not permitted to run a holiday service except jan2/dec26

It's all change on the buses

BUS giant First has axed three Glasgow services because of plunging passenger numbers.
But Strathclyde Partnership for Transport has stepped in to ensure communities are not left stranded.
From next month, the bus company plans to introduce changes to more than 30 routes across the city.
Bosses insist the majority of alterations are minor and will have little impact on passengers.
And they point out there are also plans to introduce improvements on a number of routes.
But under the shake-up, service 59, between Mosspark and the City Centre, service 77, between Coatbridge and Carnbroe, and service 84, from Kirkintilloch and Twechar, will be withdrawn.
First say all three are losing “substantial” amounts of cash.
Commercial manager John Elliot said: “With revenue falling, we had to look at problem routes – some are losing between £100,000 and £200,000 a year.”
The 77 service was originally operated by another company but First took it over six months ago.
Mr Elliot said: “The company went out of business.
“We were approached by SPT and stepped in at fairly short notice but found out why it went out of business... continues

’tis the season for the SOS bus

Image

16 Dec 2011

REVELLERS who can’t get home or get into difficulty will be able send out an SOS as a late night emergency bus will be stationed in Glasgow.Strathclyde Police’s SOS bus will be staffed by volunteers from the Red Cross and has first aid and medical equipment for people stuck in town.
It will be able to help people who are drunk or injured, have been assaulted, are fleeing domestic abuse, or are in emotional distress. The bus will offer people short-term help but offer long-term support for those with alcohol problems. It will be out between 10pm and 4am every Friday and Saturday night for a four-month pilot.
It comes as police prepare for Black Friday tonight as thousands of revellers descend of the city for festive nights out.
As reported in last night’s Evening Times there will be a heavy police presence in the city and officers have warned it will be a no entry zone for criminals and knife-wielding thugs.Senior officers warned they will be caught and locked up.The SOS bus will be stationed outside Glasgow Central Station in Gordon Street in the heart of the city centre.
Another vehicle will be out and about in the city to pick up vulnerable people and take them back to the SOS bus for help. An ambulance will also be on stand-by for emergencies.
Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Steve House said: “This weekend is traditionally one of the busiest of the year. Glasgow city centre will be full with people enjoying their Christmas party and celebrating the start of the holiday period. Our job this weekend, like every other day of the year, is to keep people safe.
“The SOS bus is an initiative that we proposed as part of the Glasgow Alcohol Strategy. I am delighted this proposal has become a reality. The bus will be a visible presence on our streets. It will be a place of safety for people who need it.
“However, it is not just somewhere to go for people to sober up. People who find themselves in the bus are clearly in need of some help. They are people who are vulnerable and need looked after in the short term but given advice and help for the longer term. This is exactly the service that the SOS bus will offer.”
Earlier this year the police and council came together to form an alcohol action group and this is one of the practical measures in place.
Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Too often the likes of the police, ambulance and A&E are left to pick up the pieces by those who misuse alcohol.”
He continues: “The SOS bus will play a vital role in preventing people who have drunk to excess from wasting the time of emergency services.
“It will provide a place of safety when someone is too drunk to look after themselves. But it will also act as the first step towards addressing someone’s binge drinking and directing them towards alcohol support services.
“All of the partners involved in developing the SOS bus in Glasgow are to be commended for playing their part in challenging Glasgow’s often damaging relationship with alcohol.”
Meg Wright, chief executive office from Glasgow Council on Alcohol, said the bus will support people who are vulnerable as a result of drinking too much alcohol.
She said: “It is a privilege for GCA to work with others in the development of the SOS bus and to provide this important service. Glasgow Council on Alcohol will support people to sober up, help them arrange safe transport home if required and offer follow-on services should they be wanted.”
Heather Sim, Red Cross service manager for West Central and South West Scotland, said SOS bus will provide a safe haven for anyone who needs help whether that means treatment for minor injuries or somewhere for travellers who have missed their train or bus home to wait for family or friends to pick them up

Man am I glad I don't do buses!!! EVER!!!

I am Thee worst traveller in the world and up chuck on even the shortest route..Can't even go more than 3 stops on the underground either!

With all the chat of dirty, smelly, uncomfortable, draughty buses with hiking fares..I'm glad i'm in the comfort of my wee Hrududu (Rabbit talk for car)...(See Watership Down)...(Sad...I know) 8O for my daily jaunt to the place I call work!

I often wondered if I could get an exemption form to avoid public transport should They than make the rules in Government hit car owners even harded for not using public transport....Maybe they could do what the airlines do and include free sick bags!

I'd use the bus then but would probably get kicked off due to the stench at the next stop!
It wisnae me.....Ask emmdy !!

Sitting at the front end aint pleasent either, On some routes youd most likely fit in though.

As one of the unlucky ones having to work between Christmas and New year, I just have to say to First Bus that your service is shite. Waited half an hour this morning for a bus that was full and freezing when it arrived and eventually walked home because there was no sign of a bus this evening :x . Really is a crap service for a big city.

Definitely worth calling or sending a letter of complaint. I found FirstBus really helpful in dealing with problems with the service. Mr Bint got on the bus a few months back, put in £4 for an all day ticket (and stupidly didn't check it, but he is a trusting Englishman) and when he handed it over to claim back expenses, discovered it was a 90p single! I called them up ready to read the riot act, but they were most apologetic, asked for the ticket number (so they could trace the driver) and send out two tokens for two free bus journeys. So in that respect, I can't fault them!

Hope they found the driver and asked him what he did with the extra $3.10 (sorry, don't have a pound sign) and also asked him how often he was pulling the same wee trick !

Never got any feedback, but the driver on the same route the following week pulled the same stunt. :Luckily Mr Bint noticed this time, and gently pointed it out to him. Cheatin' barsteward...

How does the scam work if the cash goes into the machine directly rather than via the driver.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

As Dex points out, the cash in the box never has any contact or connection with the driver, so there's no personal benefit.

I had a similar issue several times in a row with a particular driver issuing me with a ticket of less than the stated and paid for value, but I've never seen him since.

If the money never has any connection with the driver then what do Firstbus do when the days takings are checked and there is more money in the kitty than tickets given out !

Is it Firstbus who are ripping off the punters ?
