Data Harvesting.

Postby Doorstop » Mon Sep 05, 2011 6:10 pm

On a tip off from a friend it seems that Data Harvesting procedure is at present being carried out on shoppers using smart-phones inside Livingstone Centre without express permission, the only warning being a nondescript mobile phone shaped sticker visible at the entrance doors.

In my opinion this stretches function creep way inside my personal bubble and is, quite frankly, beyond the pale and raises an interesting point of order .. if it's against the law for the Police to access the data held on my phone without either permission or a warrant why does the retail sector think it's above such restrictions?

Can't disagree with you there.

From that article, it sounds not essentially dissimilar (if that's not too many negatives) to CCTV.

Now, if they were to add in the link tying the phone to the owner... but no, how unlikely is that?

I take it, btw, that everyone is aware that mobile phones continue to send out location information even when switched off? You have to remove the battery (or let it run dead flat) to stop it.

And databases don't ever get left on USB's and laptops lost on trains. Not ever.

As for your other point .. you are correct Josef .. the phone can even be switched on remotely and have the microphone or camera activated with the data streamed to A.N Other all without your knowledge.

All strictly iffy of course.
