Romani People in Glasgow/Scotland

Postby Bridie » Fri Apr 01, 2011 8:38 am

Been reading Eva Petulengro's book "The Girl in the Painted Caravan"

Got me thinking to a scene which I stepped into a few times in Lambhill circa early to mid 60's. I would go walking with two elderly aunts, who were born out the Balmore Rd in the miners cottages,we would go into St Agnes's chapel grounds and walk out the back into some fields. Every so often we'd come across what they would have called them then gypsey's or tinkers - we would sort of walk around the camp and avoid the barking dogs and mind our own business - it fascinated me as a wee girl and I would stare at the children and them at me.
I often wondered whether they were Roma people or not.
Does anyone else have a memory like this?

There's a documentary on Scotland's travelling people, called Travellers, coming up on BBC2 Scotland - possibly next Monday depending on where you live.

It might rekindle some memories.

'Travelling people' would seem to be the politically correct name being rammed down our collective throats nowadays by the usual lot who are trying to dictate the way we speak. My parents called them 'tinkers' and I still refer to them as tinkers. Its a historical Scottish name.
Most of the Scottish tinker fraternity don't travel much at all these days, preferring to remain in a static base - have a look along the railway line in the Carntyne area .
England is plagued by real travellers, overwhelmingly tinkers from Ireland.

Our parents, grandparents and beyond used a number of names for people who were different from them. Some of those differences were to do with skin colour, some were about race, others about religion and some were about lifestyle.

Thankfully, few of those names are still in common usage.

Stop being so sensitive and use the word Pikey or Gippo . None of them are tinsmiths these days.

not at all - once the kids have gone to bed it'll settle down again

However if it doesn't I'd better say now why I started the thread - get it over with
A question from a historical point of view on the Romany people who may have settled in Glasgow or even Scotland and to anyone who may have any recollections of them or information.

They once had a camp near Dalmarnock power station. I also remember seeing them in a field between Brodick and Corrie on Arran. Alsations always barking and snapping at your a***.

Are you sure about that?
I thought that some people felt it was offensive and that the term wasn't acceptable any more.
I got the impression that Travellers or Travelling People was more acceptable to those living this lifestyle.

I know I don't live in Scotland but assumed it would be the same throughout UK.
