Lucy Boxes

Postby BrigitDoon » Tue Aug 31, 2010 8:08 am

A Lucy Box is a metal box of electrical gubbins that sits by the side of the road. They used to contain the trickery for trams but latterly house telecomms gear. They were made at the Lucy foundry in Oxford, whence the name.

Didn't know that - nice name for a practical "thing" on the road. Lucy Oxford sounds like a 60's/70's sit com actress.

Did that say "Callender" maybe?

Ps excuse me - I know I've asked this numerous times before (getting like HG and 2hb with the videos) :D but how do you do the multi quote like the way I answered two things on this post........again

Just select the text you want to put in quotes, click the "Quote" button above and put the name of the person who the quote belongs to in the "" part of the quote="".

Absolutely lovely bit of trivia! :D I'll probably go looking for ways to work this into a conversation some time just to show off. I never knew they had a real name, apart from "those metal box thingwies by the side of the road ...."

I was taking a photo of an Edward VIII post box and was asked by two boys "why are you taking a picture of that mister?". I replied "because I'm a weirdo".

Probably true, but not the most sensible of answers ::):

:D

I've grown to quite enjoy those 'why the hell's he photographing that' looks. And I seem to spot actual Lucy brand Lucy Boxes all the flaming time now.

At Partick Bus Station - I've stood next to this box, waiting for buses on many an occasion over the past few years, never noticed it was a Lucy Box before!
