Arthur Black Shirts

Who remembers Arthur Black of St Enoch Square who would make the most outlandish shirts in the 1970's to your taste?

What design did you ask for?

If I had wanted a short sleeve shirt with a button down collar and button down pockets on the front and on the sleeves with six buttons on either sleeve and epaulettes and a spoon loop on the back I would have gone to Arthur Black. Luckily enough I didn't so I had my shirts made in a small shop in St. George's Road.

Fuck knows where Fossil gets his.

I usually got my nickname embroidered above the left hand pocket. AB's shirts were good value, not the kind of thing you'd go for now ofcourse.

I used to design my own shirts at school and get them made up by wee Arthur. His place was 2nd floor up in flat next to RS Mccoll. He also made me a pair of sky blue pin stripe trousers with piping around back pockets. Designed my sweaters too and got them made at Argyle House at top of Buchanan St. Shoes from Ravel on Argyle St and Prince of Wales Check made to measure suit from one of the many tailors on Argyle St. Where the **** did I get the money?

Hi I worked for Arthur Black on a Saturday morning with my friend Ann. WE did all the drawings and took down the details of the made to measure shirts. Arthur did all the measuring. We worked there from 1967 -1968 [It was the best Saturday job ever as we were both still at school] and we had a great time meeting all the guys and girls who were regular customers
My name is Yvonne. Who remembers us behind the counter???
