Noir comedy directed by Shane Black, the screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon. Small-time thief Harry Lockhart is trying to escape from the police when he accidentally lands a screen test for a a Hollywood movie. Brought to Los Angeles, he meets prickly private eye Gay Perry, and finds himself pulled along with Perry's investigation of a string of murders. It’s a classic David and Goliath battle.
On one side is a Hollywood blockbuster that cost more than £100 million and grossed £700m. On the other is an independent film made in Edinburgh and Dundee on a tiny budget that did little at the box office.
A gentle, old-fashioned film set in the Scottish capital in the 1950s, The Illusionist grossed less than £1m at British cinemas, but has impressed critics in the UK and US, where it opens on Christmas Day. It now looks set to challenge Toy Story 3 for the Oscar for best animated feature film
