Anyone know where the Kelvin walkway begins?

Postby yonza bam » Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:23 am

I think it's in the general area of the Exhibition Centre train station. Getting off the train at Exhibition Centre, where do you go from there? Thanks in advance.

I'd guess at Kelvingrove - it's not possible to go much further downstream from there, you can go through the Kelvin Hall car park for a little bit, but that's it.

This website says ...

Kelvin Walkway

E Dunbarton, Glasgow

A routeway which extends the West Highland Way south to the centre of Glasgow, the Kelvin Walkway connects Milngavie (East Dunbartonshire) with the Glasgow Heliport on the north bank of the River Clyde, where it can be linked to the longer Clyde Walkway that continues south from the city.

The Kelvin Walkway follow the river banks south from Milngavie on a route once used by Highland drovers bringing their cattle to market. The route is marked throughout its length and follows, as much as possible, the three watercourses of the Allender, Kelvin and Clyde, to form a 'green link' from the countryside to the many parks, museums, art galleries and places of historic and cultural interest.

The walkway follows the Allander Water for 2 miles (3 km) southeast from Milngavie to join the River Kelvin. The route then turns southwest leaving the Kelvin to strike south through Summerston. Joining the river again just north of Maryhill, the Walkway proceeds south through Kelvinside, Kelvingrove Park and Yorkhill to reach the Clyde.

The Trailblazer West Highland Way guide includes this Walkway between the city-centre and the official start of the West Highland Way.

Kelvingrove fountain appears to be the official start.

If you get off at Exhibitionn Centre and turn right when you exit the station, into the overpass, exit at at the SECC and head for the Clyde Walkway south of the Armadillo you could call that a start. Head west along the walkway towards the helipad as mentioned above. Turn left at teh Roundabout and either walk across the pedestrian bridge and head west along the cycle path or stay on the south side of the expressway and walk up the road parallel to the Tall Ship to the new Museum of Transport. Both bring you to the River Kelvin.

You can of course skip this bit as you will be heading back east on the north side of the expressway to Ferry Road. Walk up the road street and if you want to see the Kelvin again turn right in to Old Dumbarton Road and as suggested above cut down into the car park at the Kelvin Hall. The path does not go under the bridge at Argyle Street so you will have to leave the car park for Bunhouse Road and cross Argyle Street at the Pedestrian Crossing of course in to the Grounds Of Kelvingrove Museum. Choose between crossing the Kelvin via the old bridge or head east along the "rear" of the Museum. Both routes bring you to Kelvin Way. Cross over and into the park. Head north along the path that runs parallel to the Kelvin. The path continues under the bridge and Gibson street into the subway car park. Cross the Kelvin again at the old railway bridge and the path continues into the park and eventually teh West highland Way.

I'd wait for the inevitable corrections to this post as I'm depending on memory and Goggle maps.

When I walk alongside the Kelvin I start at its source at the village of Banton near Kilsyth. Tis only a polluted ditch there mind ye, quite undignified birth for such a posh west end river .

Another answer to an entirely different question but hey, thanks for your effort.

Sore? No.

Mildly annoyed? Yes.

Have arrived at the unavoidable conclusion that you are a prize one who undoubtedly revels in his role of pantomime villain? Yes.

Can't help but wonder if you'd be so 'smart' with your comments if they had to be made verbally rather than with your keyboard? Yes.

I know some of the far more pleasant members of this forum have vouched for your 'thoroughly nice guy' status, however I can't help but seriously question their judgement; I'm guessing it might have been impaired by the consumption of too many beverages whilst in your company.
