Well done Toomse!

I've no idea how you managed to take those pictures, especially since it sounds like
you met the same charming guy I did.

If indeed the tomb has been built over (presumably without permission) then it's criminal.

Anyway the pictures are great - and what a place!
Would look even better if they tidied it up a bit.

I can only repeat what Matt said above. Well done Toomse - and I hope you got back to civilisation safely ::):

I live in Cleddans House. I rent the old servents quaters from the owner who Im assuming is the man you reffer to. He is a lovely man and this is his families private grounds, you can't just go invading people's privacy by wandering around what it their gardens. Its a private house and family home not a tourist destination open to the general public, the people who live there value peace and quiet. You wouldn't want people trampling uninvited all over your property with cameras would you?

As for the tomb, it isn't even there anymore, It was built over so theres nothing to see just a new building. As for the tunnel, its really not very interesting. Its an old tunnel that connects the main house to the old stables and nothing more. The stables are now now private homes too.

Oh and the stables arent at the bottom of the steps. The bit that is overgrown with bullrushes at the bottom of the steps is a pond. The large wall to the left of it is a walled garden and the stables are at the back of the house on the other side of the tunnel.

I'm sure he is a lovely man when he wants to be but unfortunately the day I visited, he just didn't
seem to want to be.

I made (what I thought was) a perfectly reasonable request and I was very polite. He was rude and dismissive.

I didn't go trampling uninvited all over the property.

Also we've established that the tomb is no longer there and that it's been built over.
Do you know what happened to it or what it looked like?
Why do NLC's planning department's plans think a tomb is still located there?

https://eplanning.northlan.gov.uk/Onlin ... 58OBATB000

I think I just heard a can of worms being opened.

EDIT: The above link to NLC's planning department is tempramental and doesn't always work (????)
Toomse's map from page 5 of this thread shows the same thing though...

Well one person took pictures looking right in my windows along the back which I find a bit disturbing.

I have never seen the tomb, I've only lived there 18 months and the new house that is on the spot has been there since I arrived so I'm afraid I can't really help there. I do know it was disturbed during buidling works however as I've been told that there where no ghosts in the house before the tomb was disturbed and there certainly are now.

Having said that, looking at the map it looks as though the tomb is actually where the garage is rather the new house.

Well thats different then..........Its wriiten in the NLC planning rules, you can build a garage on someones grave but not a house. Well I'm off to New Monkland cemetery to construct my 4 bedroom detatched garage!!!

eejit alert!!!!

I wasn't saying it was ok to build anything on a tomb I was simply commenting on where I think it us after seeing the map. I have no idea when the garage was built or wether they had planning permission or not I was just speculating on where it might be because I was interested to learn there was a tomb in the grounds of the house I live in.

Perhaps next time you speak to your landlord you could ask him about it and what happened to it?

I'd be really interested to know what he says.

Maybe you'll get the same response I did?

I've a few possibilies with regards whose tomb it may have been...

1./
Before Cleddans House was built, I think the land was owned and farmed by the Steel family.
It wasn't unknown for 18th century farmers in the area to have a private burial ground or "tomb" on their land.
Thats really how this thread started. I've found about a dozen of the things all within about a ten mile radius of where I live.

2./
The house was built in 1849 for a Mr. McHardie, Sheriff-Clerk of Airdrie.
The tomb may have been his and built when he popped his clogs.

3./
In the late 19th and early 20th century the house was the residence of the Rankine family.
I'm sure the tomb was not theirs though.

I'm sure option 1 is the most likely and this would mean that the tomb pre-dates the house.
Knightmare pretty much said this when Cleddans was first mentioned in this thread...

Perhaps you could ask your landlord if any of the above names ring any bells?
Even better does he perhaps have a picture of what it looked like?

Good luck!! :D

My landlords family bought the house from some polish people who were a bit odd from what I gather that was about 20 years ago there is an old book in the house with a drawing of how the house looked when built. I'm sure if I can have a read it might have some infor regarding all if the above.fascinating stuff though. I never even knew it existed until I moved there. There's a section on historic Scotland about it.the steps at the front are also listed along with the house itself.inside they've restored in a very fitting traditional way no attempts to modernise the decor which is one of the reasons I love it! I'll let you know what I find out!

Emmm, its been a while.

RCAHMS have bugger aw on their page for Cleddans. It appears on the Forrest map of 1816 as 'Claydens' but that means little. More importantly the tomb appears!

So date it pre Waterloo.

I thought Cleddans House was being hired out to wedding receptions for a while.

Yes, I'm sure it was. It's also been a nursing home and a B&B in recent years.

Nice to see you're still alive Icecube!
