Obligatory atmospheric shot:

I'm actually quite taken with the deterioration going on, a shame though it is of course:

Ronnie wrote:The building, designed by John Bryce, is known as the Facade. It was originally built as the entrance to catacombs, but these were never built. So the space behind the doors only extends as far as the rock face, around two or three metres. It's where they store the big lawnmowers, as well as any of the bronzes or statuary that is are danger of falling off the back of a hearse, if you get my meaning.

Here's the very chap again:

And its long-winded (and almost punctuation-free) inscription:
Image

The adjoining bridge was erected by the Merchants [sic] House of Glasgow to afford a proper entrance to their new cemetery combining convenient access to the grounds with suitable decoration to the venerable Cathedral & surrounding scenery to unite the tombs of many generations who have gone before with the resting places destines for generations yet unborn where the ashes of all shall repose until the resurrection of the just when that which is born a natural body shall be raised a spiritual body when the corruptible must put on incorruption when this mortal must put on immortality when death is swallowed up in victory

A. D. MDCCCXXXIII

“Blessed is the man who trusteth in God and whose hope the Lord is”

The most religiose dedication for any lawnmower shed in Europe, shurely?

It looks like candle light flickering at night in the large round tomb at the top! Very atmospheric.

Noticed today (not been for a while) that the Superintendent's house has the windows all boarded up. Are we expecting a fire sometime soon?

I was speaking to a wee woman who lives in the Milnbank flats next door. She heard from the Parkie that it was being sold off by the council.

Or they could use "The Big Society" to do the job.

Isn't that the way our country is going?
