And this is how the story of the Bothwell Street tunnel started.

8) 8) Giving my age away, but saw hundreds of concerts at the Greens etc, but the one I remember with the most clarity (and there maybe many reasons for that) was Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, with a backing intro duo called Tir na'Nog.
Halcyon days guys and galls, Peter Green was immense and became my guitar hero, and although I saw Clapton, Page, Beck,Santana, Walsh, and a whole host of others, I still consider what I saw that night to be the best...... ::):

Greens Playhouse

Can anybody confirm that Jimi Hendix played the first gig there in 1967. If so I was at the first gig ever at the Greens. My sister took me as she was a big Amen Corner fan !!!

Saw many brilliant bands at the Apollo in the 70s and 80s. One memorable concert was Steve Hillage. Got free tickets if I remember. Not a great concert as I had never heard any of his music beforehand. However, it was the first and only quadraphonic concert I have ever attended. There were the usual bank of Marshall speakers on stage and the same to the rear of the stalls. A forerunner to surroundsound systems for TVs today!!

When I was at Strathclyde Uni I walked in to the Apollo and asked for a job as an "overly sensitive and thoughtful bouncer". Got to see some brilliant bands and got paid £1.25 an hour for it too. I remember my first night - The Who - The guy who was "mentoring" me told me that if anyone rushes the stage " punch the first one really hard, he'll go down and he'll trip up anyone behind him.... The Who started, my mentor b*ggered off, but luckily no-one rushed anywhere. A great year, getting paid while watching the best bands in the world. Used to get in free to the Wed night cinema nights too :)

3,500.
Was it not supposed to have been the largest cinema in Europe when it was Green's Playhouse??

I've got a note of the seating capacity as a cinema as 4,368, which did indeed make it the largest cinema in Europe in those terms. Green's in Dundee was another monster at 4,114 seats.

By contrast, the largest cinema built in England was the State in Kilburn, which sat 4,004.

126 Renfield Street, City Centre

Opened: September 15th 1927
Closed: June 16th 1985

Designed by: John Fairweather

Number of screens: 1

Number of seats:
Green's Playhouse: 4368
Apollo: 3500

I'm not sure if the Apollo ever opened up the very top balcony so the 4368 capacity only applies to The Greens Cinema.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

I'm not sure if they used the upper balcony, but can see them not doing so - would have been a fair distance from the stage and doubt they'd ever have needed the full capacity for even the busiest gig.

But the auditorium was just part of the building, I've heard a (probably ludicrous!) estimate that if all parts of it were operating to capacity, it could entertain 10,000 people at the same time...!
