Well found, Cell.

Maybe they were as per the current street recycling bins - a small opening for adding to the contents, and a larger lid for retrieving the contents?

Dung Traps that's what I was told years ago. It's where the horse and pony dung was put until collected later. I have seen a photo somewhere of a Cleansing Man with a shaped scoop which was used for cleaning out theTraps.

Henry Lees, does anyone have any information on this company such as where their works were, what products did they make or when they ceased trading? All I can find is a reference to “coaling plant” which I presume is equipment for moving large amounts of coal at railway yards, power stations and docks etc.

Two Glasgow plates and the related equipment from the Lyness naval base on Hoy in Orkney

Butters Brothers on a small crane

Wilson Boilermakers Lilybank, on some oil fired boilers used to generate steam for heating and pumping fuel oil for the Navy. I’d never heard of this company but they seem to have been a significant concern and were part of the John Thompson group. Their works seem to have been in the east end but I don’t know where or if there is anything left now.http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/wiki/John_Thompson_(Wilson_Boilers)

The works were in Lilybank.

Bounded by Maukinfauld Road, Glenshee Street, Glenisla Street. A rail spur ran from Wilson's via Dunning Street to the Glasgow Central Line

Thanks Dexter, it looks like that area is all new houses now, so I guess there is no trace of the works left.

Clearly it was all happening in Motherwell.

Nice ones LP!
Slightly older one from Alexander Findlay which I found in Perth station
Image

Two small ones from Glasgow, Malcolm & Allan ltd and John Daziel & Sons, which I can find no more information apart from what is on the plates. I would appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on what they produced and any dates.

Here is one from a company still in existence, D & J Tullis has long history making machine tools and industrial laundry equipment. They were established in 1891 in Parkhead but moved to Clydebank for larger premises, where they took over the Kilbowie Ironworks site. In 1961 they were taken over and became part of the Manlove Tullis Group and although they later sold the Ironworks site, which now forms part of the Clydebank Shopping Centre, they still have a site in Clydebank Buisness Park

One of their early slogans was "Don't kill the wife - let us do the dirty work"! which has to be one of the cleverest advertising slogans I’ve heard for a while.
