Possil Pottery

Image

The picture above shows the base of one of the kilns of the former Saracen Pottery, identified within an evaluation trench by staff from Glsgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD). This evaluation, which followed on from monitoring conducted on the excavation of site investigation holes, took place on the advice of the West of Scotland Archaeology Service.

The Possil or Saracen Pottery, which was constructed around 1881 for the Saracen Pottery Company, was a major producer of stoneware commercial goods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The pottery was latterly (from mid-WWI until mid-WWII) in the ownership of Tennents the brewers, who thereby safeguarded their supply of stoneware beer bottles, particularly for the export market. Other wares continued to be produced until the factory's closure in 1942.

I can confirm the stoneware bottles being exported. My mother has a stoneware bottle of Tennants bought from a street stall in Georgetown, Guyana.

I have no idea if this bottle is a Glasgow bottle but at the bottom appears to be a stamp and I cannot really make out the top word but the bottom looks to be Glasgow and if I had to guess, the last letters of the top word spell svenor.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me identify this bottle with such info as age, use, etc. Thanks so much from Oklahoma City, OK!

I did a Google search and thanks to your info, I was able to find out a little more about it. It might be a beer bottle made in Scotland. Anyway, thanks so much and I look forward to any other info anyone might have.

I did some googling too and the results said something about ginger. I had to go out so didn't have time to look any further. There's a ginger thread on here somewhere - maybe that might be worth looking through.

Right here goes...
Number 1 and 3 are paste bottles, (Fish, chicken etc) paste was a cheap sandwich filling sold in small jars as a cheap alternative to buying real sanwich filling, also they were designed to not need refrigeration

The problem was that they all tasted the same and nothing like the thing that they were ment to be (go get one and try for yourself 8) ). Paste jars come o=in all shapes and sizes but are usually 6-8 ish cms tall and dumpy like the ones you have with a blank space for a paper label.

Jar no 2 might be a scent bottle - perfume was/is expensive so it came in small expensively decorated bottles usually denoted by being oddly shaped and having small apertures at the top.

Mr Sam

P.S. I'm off to photo all of my paste jars to show you sizes and scales etc

Hi Guys I live in Trinidad, Caribbean and was given a old vessel by my father in law that got this from his grandfather...made by fossil pottery for Richard Smith's executors ltd. Acid makers. The vessel is approximately 20" tall and 2-3 gallons. Does anyone know the acid that was in it?

Will post a picture soon, as I have not seen it on the forum

It's unusual
