Surely there is so little of what could be considered to be original Clydebank left that the baths should be restored. After all it is West Dunbartonshire councillor Ronnie McColl and his predecesors that let them get into the state they are in. Credit where credit is due, blame likewise...no?

the only place in clydebank where you can see the shrapnel holes from the blitz and they want to demolish it.they have destroyed clydebank bit by bit over the years the fuckwits.

our town

they say theyre going to rebuild our town
theyve just spent three decades pulling it down
they started with the women and then
one by one they picked off all the men

theres nothing left of the shipyard but the ghost of a cran
that once was the signal of hope for everyman
your apprenticeship to life was guaranteed
but now it stands abandoned in the dust and the weed

their nepotistic tendencies confirm our fears
theyve passed on their destructive ways to their sons and heirs
now can you tell me how red is our clyde
for theres million pound houses with two people inside

i may die with asbestosis and an arthritic hand
but i have lived a life that they will never understand
they silenced us when we spoke of our fears
so they can keep their stocks and shares and crocodile tears.

our town ,by banjo.

I find it absurd the thought of pulling down the Clydebank baths (the new bath as the were called to distinguish them from the old baths in Hall Street)
So much of old Clydebank has been pulled down over the past 30 years it would be a tragedy to lose any more, many of the old building could have been revamped and incorporated into a new town centre.

I learned to swim in the Bruce Street baths, and got a certificate to prove signed by Mr Friel , the baths manager

I can think of no other town where so much of its town centre was just destroyed, it would be a tragedy if any more was lost

clydeata, braidfield school gone and the landboilers is soon to be no more.if anyone has ever seen what was once clydebank riverside train station then you can see how saving old buildings and modernising them and turning them into flats can be done without to much cosmetic surgery.this building has all its original charm and beauty and is a great example of what can be done in preservation.the bruce st baths could be transformed in much the same way.

It seems to me that if it's not all shiny and new then our councilors are not interested.

It's a shame that nothing is being done to save the heritage of clydebank and preserve the few buildings that the Luftwaffe didn't destroy.

Banjo
So much of what has gone could have been saved, and updated for another use.

The old Electricity showroom (the circular glass building) in Chalmers street, would that not have made an excellent cafe (look at the old buildings successfully converted elsewhere)

Many of the pubs had fantastic glass and woodwork Seven Seas at corder of Kilbowie Rd, Connelly s Glasgow road. these had great interiors that could have been done up.

hope the save this

I'm guessing you mean this clip banjo:

Superb stuff, had never seen that before. Wonderful old pubs from around the 5:50 mark, and great old cars and buses throughout.

I finally managed to get access to the baths and found it all a bit depressing. The only parts of the baths that could be saved would be the building and the swimming area; all the other parts are well beyond saving due to the lack of maintenance over the last 15 years. I would not like to guess what it would cost to restore the baths in its entirety but l can understand the council’s reluctance due to cuts in budgets and the like. If they have to do anything with the old baths then l think they should retain the original building and clear the interior. It’s sad to see the baths in the state they are in but that’s progress for you, no council will ever maintain unused buildings, the cost would simply be too much and could never be justified to the public.

Thanks for the excellent photographs and your wise words. The swimming area does appear in good condition and recognisable to anyone who attended a municapal pool.

I should have studied typing Latin.

True, but the pool itself is so nice that it has to be saved.
