Requesting info on Botanic Gardens Railway Station

Postby ClanClass » Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:51 pm

Hey there folks,

First thing first. I'm new and glad to have joined. I'm based just outside of Glasgow and have a huge interest in railway lines and their past.

I'm looking for a particular picture of Glasgow's Botanic Gardens railway station (a station I'm sure you're all familiar with). It's a digital painting (done on a computer I think) of the station being open and in use. I think it was in black and white, but I'm not completely sure.

Secondly, am I right in guessing it's illegal to even go and stand outside the tunnel at Kirklee? I've been down there with some friends, but I just stood outside the tunnel with one friend while the others climbed the fence and entered. It seems Network Rail doesn't like people in there, but what about going down and standing outside it? I ask because I was in the gardens today and saw the old tunnel portal and was tempted to go down and enter, but there was so many people around at the time, and if it wasn't illegal, I could've just said I'm going to take some pictures of the outside of the old tunnel),

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi ClanClass; welcome to HG :)

We like our railways here so you'll feel at home. We have threads for full size railways and another for model railways.

Don't know about the legalities, today, but I walked the length of the tunnel from the Botanics to Kelvingrove in '74. It was fenced off then, but there were plenty of gaps in the fence and no barrier at the tunnel entrance. The station at Gt. Western Rd was the highlight. I know a few well sozzled drinkers from 'The Doublet' in Park Rd who did it from the opposite direction.

It's just trespass, nothing criminal - at most, you'll get a telling-off if you're caught, but I doubt it...

Also an open door is an open door, just don't crack out the bolt cutters and you'll be fine.

I think I know the images you are looking for, just not sure where they were posted. It was a long time ago and they may not be online now. I'll have a wee hunt about.

//edit, they were in this thread viewtopic.php?f=15&t=594&p=6681&hilit=cgi+station#p6681

and no longer online :( Might be worth PM'ing the guy.

Thanks a lot. PMing him now.

So I was down at the tunnel today. My first stop was Kirklee station where there was no trains schedualed to stop at :(. So I made my way down the line to the tunnel, which was, sadly, still completely fenced off with no way in. There was an opening, but it was only about as wide as my leg!

However, the sunlight was bright enough for me to see into the tunnel, and it looked creepy!

Maybe I'll have better luck at the Kelvinbridge entrace soon enough.

Didn't take my camera as I didn't plan on going today in the first place. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing when one of my classes was cancelled.

Some good photos of the tunnel and underground railway station in the Botanics on this Youtube clip.

And this is an expedition through the section under Kelvingrove Park. You're gonna need a bigger torch. Some good info for you in the comments bit.
