Hollow Horn Asks:

Postby HollowHorn » Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:11 pm

I lost a fair few photos during a hard drive problem recently, I managed to recover most of them (cheers John) but some returned untitled & I can't remember the exact locations. As I go through my files I'll post up some photos & general questions & will be gratefull to recieve any ino you folks may offer. I'll start with these two:

What street is this? [Not far from Sauchihall St.]:

Which building is this & what street is it on:

And a question:
What area would you say contains the Ben Nevis Bar, not Finnieston I think, is it Cranstonhill?

The first one is 202 Bath Street.

Why is it not Finnieston? Finnieston Station is just out the back.

Perhaps Sandyford if neither Cranstonhill or Finesttown work

I'm not sure if it's an actual name but the local clap clinic is called the Sandyford Clinic and the Doctors surgery doon the road is the Sandyford Surgery so it leads me to believe that Sandyford has something to do with the area.

Sandyford is that area (much of it 're-classed' as Charing Cross) but the Sandyford area was along Sauchiehall Street nearer Kelvingrove, encompassing the north side of Argyle Street and covering parts of Berkley Street, Kent Road, etc. I can't pinpoint exactly but my mother can - she was brought up in the area.

HH - how are you auld yin? I don't know the answer to pic (2) but I'd like to learn as it's a great piece of architecture - even to an uneducated eye such as mine.... :?

Isn't Kelvinhaugh the other side of the park? Not pushing the point btw, just trying to remind myself of where places are at.

Yes, it's a beauty, I'm getting the feeling that it's around Denniston, not sure why though.

Would you not say that Anderston lies to the north & east of Finnieston?

Well, I'm a bit puzzled here. That looks like Apollo in the middle to me, and the very worthwhile GlasgowSculpture.com has this to say about the Sun Life building on West George Street :

The Sun Life Building's success was due in large part to William Birnie Rhind, who produced one of the city's most exuberant displays of architectural sculpture for its facades.

Drawing on the Italian Renaissance and the work of Michelangelo and his David and Medici Tomb figures, the sculpture scheme includes a statue of Aurora, the Goddess of the dawn, standing on a chariot drawn by galloping horses.

There is also a standing, nude Apollo, the God of Commerce and the arts, who holds a lyre; and a series of profile heads and busts, one of which is of Mithras; as well as heraldic groups and a series of columns with intricately detailed capitals, including the signs of the zodiac.

Which certainly sounds like our chap there. But I'm not sure it is.
