On consulting a map, I see you are correct James :)

I'm not familiar with the area at all, but check page 30/31 in the Glasgow Photographic Atlas (if you have it)... whats that circular feature?

Townhead was declared a Comprehensive Development Area in 1962, to allow for the construction of the M8 motorway and the expansion of the University of Strathclyde. The plan proposed to reduce the number of dwellings from 6,500 to 2,400, the population from 19,000 to 7,000, and the number of shops from 420 to 60.

With "plans" like that no wonder the friggin city fell apart.

Thanks John, for that incredible picture. Look at it - Parlimentary Road
all but intact, nothing but the 4 tower blocks in Townhead, the site of
Buchanan St still undeveloped, the High St Goods Station still there, the
tenements at the top of the High St still there, as is the old waterworks
building.

As Billy Connolly has said many times..
Who are these bastards?...

John

Whoah!!!! Amazing photo! Where did you find it? More to the point would you mind if I referred to it as part of my open doors day walk down Buchanan street? I've just been in the Mitchell ordering maps to illustrate how Parliamentary Road completely disappeared but this image is just as eloquent.

Talk about how to fuck up your city. No wonder Glasgow is in that exclusive club of former million cities. There are only 6 of them. I know the planners thought they would improve living conditions by reducing density but a bit of joined up thinking might have helped. I knew things were bad but is it any wonder the city's economy collapsed? What was it about the city fathers mind set that they total bought into the bullshit modernist planners vision and gave approval to this? They must have really been ashamed / insecure of their city to treat it with such contempt. Did the Parisian's buy into Le Corbusiers Villa Radiuse thinking and drastically re-model their city? Don't be daft! Isn't it ironic that 30 years later urban theorists are busy preaching the value of high densities and Glasgow city council are now doing their utmost to drive densities up?

Incidently did the planners succeed in their attempted cull to drive the population down from 19,000 to 7000? Or, don't tell me, did the actual resultant figure wildly overshoot the base level figure?

Exactly!!

Not sure if your tongue is in your cheek, but I think Parly Road existed where I have drawn the blue line. If not there, then very nearby parallel to this line.

I despise what has been done to Townhead and surrounding areas over the years. I did not recognise the place on my last visit to Glasgow. Makes me  and
