Transatlantic flights

A colleague is looking to fly from Glasgow to New York. There are direct flights, however on the dates he has looked at it is cheaper on every occasion to fly via London. I'm told that these flights are almost always full regardless so I wouldn't imagine that passenger numbers affect pricing, therefore with added fuel and added landing fees etc, why isn't a direct flight cheaper? Anyone know?

Don't know the answer but in 2008 we flew out from Manchester to JFK as we got a better deal than
flying from N.I.

Glasgow does seem to be dearer even for flights to Europe.
I remember meeting a couple in Spain one time who had travelled to Manchester as it was a much lower price and I don't just mean a few pounds.
By a million to one chance we met the same couple the following year when we were back in same resort.

Could a capitalist explain the difference in costs of flying one plane per day as compared to flying several particularly when you face competition from other airlines from the same airport.

I'm guessing you mean 'How come an operator that, when they had a monopoly on a route, ran one service a day at a squillion quid per seat suddenly runs ten services a day at a tenner per seat until the new-found competition suddenly decides the route isn't really worthwhile?'

The fixed costs of running a base may be spread across more seats when more flights are added. However I suspect costs are a bit of a red herring, I think cost is not so much a factor as market price. People are usually prepared to pay a premium to fly from a local airport and/or reduce the number of stops.
