Red car speeding past the pic of the demolished cinema is a MkIV Escort, produced 1986-1990. The earlier B&W shot has nothing produced beyond around 1983.

The art deco pavilion is indeed listed, category C-(s):

Just happened to be discussing it with Nodrog a week or so ago, by curious coincidence.

As for the cinema, the pic we have of it from the mid-80s shows it as both a car salesroom and some kind of DIY centre:

The only other cinema we have a pic of for Dalmuir is a former Masonic Hall. In fact, we don't even seem to have any details on it being a cinema at all, other than from the chap who supplied us with the photos - anyone help? Is it still there?

Sorry Gap74, no modern pics as yet.

Around Dalmuir:
You can see the tank proving ground on this photo (the big M at the bend of the river):

A tank built by William Beardmore & Co during the First World War.
Beardmore had become a major warship builder and naval armaments manufacturer before the war, and the range of weapons and munitions produced at the firm's vast Parkhead Forge expanded rapidly after 1914. Among other things, the company built fifty tanks. The pedrail shoes (the treads) for the tanks were manufactured at Parkhead and the rest of the work was completed at the firm's Dalmuir works.

Agamemnon Carvings/Beardmore’s Shipyard
In 1899 William Beardmore decided to set up
a shipyard in Dalmuir. Work started in 1901
and by the time it was complete in 1906 they
were ready to launch the biggest warship so
far built on the Clyde, the battleship Agamemnon.
After the First World War when orders
for ships declined, Beardmore diversified into
cars, motorbikes, bicycles, locomotives, aeroplanes,
tanks and airships. In the 1920s, Beardmore
went into decline and finally closed in
1935.
Stone carvings commemorating the battleship
Agamemnon can be seen on the tenement
wall on Dumbarton Road at Agamemnon St.

Ah, found the Masonic Hall thing on the isometric Bird's Eye aerial pics on Bing Maps.

I know we've got it in the Dalmuir section of the cinema website, should we more accurately place it here on the Clydebank page?

I know there's often no exact definition, but what would you broadly define Dalmuir as in terms of the area bounded by given streets/rivers/etc?

I've a pic somewhere of the Atlantis that I took the day we did the interior shots of the Clydebank ABC shortly before the bingo shut. Fantastic looking building, looks perhaps about 1950s to me? Anyone know when it was built and if the interior has any interesting period detail?

I asked a driver at Dalmuir about the building, and according to him its now used a s a pumping station, you can see water under the grilles beside it when you pass it after heavy rain, it must be what they use to TRY and stop the Twin Bore Tunnel from flooding

Cheers, HH. I've wondered where Agamemnon Street got its name from every time I've been at the Golden Jubilee.

Yes, should be in the Clydebank section, it is almost opposite the town hall.

I know there's often no exact definition, but what would you broadly define Dalmuir as in terms of the area bounded by given streets/rivers/etc?

By the Clyde to the south, the railway line to the north, the roundabout at Old Dalnottar Rd to the west & the old bridge at the Boilermakers social club to the east.(just to the west of the Masonic hall)
I know Dalmuir Park is to the north of the rail line but the park (imo) is acualy in Mountblow / Parkhall.

I drank there many times during the 70's, both the downstairs bar & the upstairs lounge were all plastic & fake wood which I suppose could be seen as interesting period detail ::): As far as the build date, I'd say nearer early 60's.

Did you think that there was a Dalmuir battalion at the siege of Troy? ::):

Gap, have you missed out the 'Palace Picture House' on Kilbowie Rd? (Clydebank) or am I just not seeing it?
I remember the 'Empire' burning down, we watched it from my grannie's house in Drumry.
Long after the 'Bank' closed, we (kids) managed to get in one night, there was a rope suspended from the ceiling & you could swing from the stage out over the auditorium. I remember being in the managers office & liberating a large glass paperweight (first time I'd seen one) from his desk. I doubt the retaining wall is still standing now.

Pee ess, many years later someone gave me a tab of LSD, being a feartie, I took half and promptly went to sleep. I'll never forget my dream that night though, it was about that swing in the 'Bank', such a vivid dream. :D

Not on the main Clydebank page cos we don't have a pic of it - but it's in the database:

Palace Kilbowie Road Clydebank Demolished
o. as Palace of Varieties before becoming full-time cinema. Owned at some point by JB Milne. Sold with his other cinemas to SCVT, 1917. Sold to George Palmer, 1940, but destroyed in blitz before it reopened.

Good acid story though!

HH - that must be one of the most elaborate and best tenement carvings in the Glasgow area . I love it . However, the cannons are troubling and call to mind the finer details of certain antique Greek ceramics :)
