Mortuary on Sauchiehall St

Postby allyharp » Mon Oct 26, 2009 10:47 am

Someone told a friend that the basement of the building containing the Bier Hof on Sauchiehall St was once a mortuary. This one here

Sounds like shite to me, but has anyone ever heard anything similar?

I was under the impression that what used to be the Cooler bar on Pitt street used to be a mortuary.

If memory serves me right, Wylie & Lochhead Undertakers used to have premises just round the corner in Pitt Street and before the lane that runs at the back of Sauchiehall Street. It is feasible that their premises, including chapel of rest at the front of the shop, ran quite a way back into the rear of all the buildings in the surrounding area. Therefore it is possible that the mortuary part of the business is now the premises you are interested in.

Some of the bars on Sauchiehall St are like mortuaries.

Agreed. W&L had its offices at ground level and a "cooler" in the basement. Hence the bar name.
