Richmond Park

Postby papa lazarou » Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:15 pm

Can't believe today was the first I have ever been in this park and left really sad. I believe this is the most under-rated, under-used area of Glasgow I have ever come across. And what about the old path on the southside of the Clyde that used to run through the park to God knows where? Does anyone know if there are plans to regenerate this area along with the new build homes?

From the Glasgow Council website.....

The regeneration of Oatlands has presented a golden opportunity to comprehensively upgrade the park and around £2 million has been allocated to upgrade the recreational provision, landscape framework and appearance of Richmond Park. A full-size football pitch, a multi-purpose games court and a range of children’s play facilities will be provided, including two pre-school play areas, an adventure playground and possibly, subject to community agreement, a ‘wheels sport area’ for skateboarding. New flower beds will be laid out, footpaths (including the one by the river) will be upgraded, new park railings with a distinctive design will be provided, and the appearance of the pond will be improved, further enhanced by a new fountain or water feature.

'........ a high quality family pub/restaurant is proposed overlooking the model boat pond in Richmond Park.

The proposed family pub/restaurant building will include changing facilities for the proposed sports facilities in Richmond Park.

Yes, it is a shame as it is a lovely quiet park. The number of ducks and swans freaks me out. does anyone know if the model boat club still meets?

Info on a building in Richmond Park

Postby bAzTNM » Mon Sep 24, 2012 5:34 pm

Hi! Very hard to describe this one.

You know Richmond Park right? You know the football pitch there? Next to it there are gates and when you enter the gates, there used to be some sort of club house thing (knocked down maybe five years ago?). Does anybody know the actual name of that building and what it was actually used for? Thanks a lot!

Was the building right next to the pond? There was one there, (I don't know if it is gone now or not) and that may be the one you mean. .... I seem to remember that there were paddle boats for the pond at one time. You know the sort of thing - "Come in number nine, you're time's up!" Maybe the building was for the guy who looked after the boats, or maybe it was used to store the boats in the winter-time.

Thanks anyway.

Baz,
I used to be a Clyde supporter, back in the late fifties and sixties, when they had some really good teams.
Not many people know this, but the Bully Wee had five international players in their team around that time.
I also tried to get a job in Richmond Park once, which as you know is right next to Clyde's old ground, but can't remember where I went for the interview. I didn't get a job there but later got one at Tollcross park.

I always liked Richmond Park, but felt it was sort of tucked away where it was situated, and maybe not that well-known because of that... I watched the first half of your video and it gives me the impression that much of the area has gone to the dogs, and is overgrown with grass and weeds everywhere. It's hard to believe if that's true.
