Flagpoles at Anniesland X

I've always been curious about the tenement with the 2 flag poles outside it at Anniesland X.

Who puts up the flags? There seems to be no discernable reason for the choice of flags, they often change but why? The building is a prime bit of real estate but it looks totally empty and run down, why is this? How do they put up the flags - from the tenement windows or with ladders to reach the flag poles?

Perhaps this has been asked elsewhere, if so my apologies, I couldn't find anything when I searched.

i've often wondered about these too
its been a few weeks since i've been up there but i've taken some photos of the flags before as they used to change quite often, they had Franch and Italian flags up around World cup final time

incidently has anyone else noticed that just along from here there is a single window on Anniesland Court that is always always open?

I remember reading something about this a while back, long before HG appeared - seem to recall it's a guy who lives there apparently, he changes the flags according to whatever international events take his fancy - so the French ones go up for Bastille Day, etc.

Doubt the article will be online, and I have no idea what paper it was in anyways!

The two empty shops and all the 6 empty flats above are owned by a baldy excentric guy. My Brother in law offered him £200.000 for the small shop but he said he didnt need the money. Why the flags fly is a bit of a mystery even to the shop owners I know. And why he took out that window on the top floor is baffling. Weird guy

If memory serves the shop next to the shoe repair place used to be the Top Hat Cafe, where I spent a large part of my yoof.
Spectacular sight was seeing the cycle racing training sessions sprinting from Knightswood Cross to Anniesland Cross, last man got the pokey hats.

There seem to be a lot more empty shops at Anniesland Cross since the cooncil introduced parking charges. I wonder if this is just another money-making excercise by local gooberment or perhap it's the big supermarkets using their considerable influence to shut down the competition?

The only thing thats closed since then is the Clydesdale Bank, and they were closing branches all over the place.

I often wondered what the deal with the flags was when I was Head Steward in BJ's (just out of shot on the lower left of the photos) .. I was told much the same thing by the regulars, just an ordinary bloke who puts the flags out on an ad-hoc basis depending on national celebrations in the country in question.
