And what's with putting in Fitz. A programme where the main actor died years ago is being punted as "new". Get a grip. Cheap, nasty telly.

Taggart died a death when Jackie Reid joined. Rubbish actress.

Dear Mr **************

Thank you for your email to STV.

STV are no longer showing episodes of the Bill.

STV has recently launched a strategy to take greater control of our schedule. Our aim is to provide viewers with a diverse schedule of Scottish programming and acquired series, to complement the large amount of quality network material that our viewers already enjoy.

To accommodate this new programming it will inevitably mean displacing other material and we will be using the peak-time slot at 9pm on Thursday evenings from 23rd July, previously designated for The Bill.

New programming from STV will span a range of genre, including: a celeb-packed documentary series called Made In Scotland, examining the iconic symbols that give Scotland such strong visibility internationally; a visually stunning exploration of Scotland from the air, entitled Scotland Revealed; and a fascinating series covering the stories of the many Scots who fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War, called Homage to Caledonia. We'll be announcing even more new programming over the next few months.

Please be assured that we are absolutely committed to maintaining a healthy creative industry in Scotland by investing in new, high quality Scottish productions and creating a diverse schedule for viewers.

ITV1 will still be showing episodes of The Bill, however this is a separate channel from STV. If you are experiencing difficulties with ITV1 or ITV3 on your digital box, this would be an issue for Virgin Media to deal with.

We hope you enjoy the new programming from STV and thank you again for getting in touch.

Kind Regards

SO NOW WE KNOW

If they mean what they (seem to) say, then all well and good. However:
STV has recently launched a strategy to take greater control of our schedule. Our aim is to provide viewers with a diverse schedule of Scottish programming and acquired series, to complement the large amount of quality network material that our viewers already enjoy.

... which means to say, "We're skint. Please don't poke fun at us."

PS anybody suggesting Weir's Way was anything other than brilliant should go jump off a tall building.

Of course Weir's Way was brilliant. But if they start putting it on at peak viewing time, then they are surely taking the piss.

Scottish programming. I can smell the shortbread from here. If they are so skint, why are they always giving John Michie work?

It begs the question of why are they giving any of them work as i`m sure a few folk on here are more knowlegeable about Scotland than them and would do a far superior job.

It ain't about their knowledge (all they're doing is reading a script) - it's about their familiarity. Most Scottish folk are intrinsically conservative (with a small 'c') don't welcome change. That's why Phil and Aly still get the Hogmanay Show even though there's plenty better talent about. That's why we get re-runs of Ricki Fulton, Rab C and re-makes of Only An Excuse when they're clearly past their sell by date.

Speak for yourself. I hate the way Scotland is portrayed on TV, that's certainly not the Scotland that's out there. STV are making this rubbish, hoping to sell it to Canada and the States. Now, if STV were to start making some really decent shows about the history of Glasgow, it's archetecture and all those hidden streets under Argyle Street  then that would be worth watching. Bagpipes, tartan and whisky is not for the modern Scot. The year of Homecoming? Spare me.

Haud the bus. I'm with you almost 100% here. You need only check the comments of mine which have been allowed to remain to know how I feel about Homecoming and the commercialisation and televising of the Brigadoon caricature of Scotland favoured by so mant people.

The type of programmes you suggest probably would be worth watching but STV has a wider remit than simply appealing to Hidden Glasgow members and, perhaps more importantly, needs to ensure the programmes it makes will attract the size of audience advertisers will pay to get their products in front of.

A prime example is STV's Gaelic output. STV does it because it has to and the outcome is the absolutely dreadful music shows like Ceol na Fidhle and Ceol aig a Chaisteal are shown in the middle of the night to virtually no viewers and, consequently, attract no advertisers so there's no money to improve the quality of the programmes and so on.

I disagree entirely with your comment re whisky and the modern Scot.

A new series of cop drama Taggart is to be made by STV next year, even if ITV refuse to recommission it.

Hopefully that'll mean the end of the Irish* pish they've been broadcasting recently.

* it's not pish because it's Irish, it's pish which happens to be Irish.

Can we change the topic heading?

Taggart's returning to our screens … but it could be shown on BBC.

A NEW series of Taggart, one of Scottish Television's flagship dramas, could be aired on the BBC or a satellite channel should ITV decide not to recommission the gritty crime series.
