UNDER GLASGOW CENTRAL

Postby BOMMBILD » Wed Jan 28, 2004 11:34 am

At the moment I'm working on a Public Art Project for Glasgow Central station and I have been thinking of somehow using the idea of the old rooms that exist underneath the station. Unfortunatly I'm finding it really hard to get access to information about this space, as they have apparently been closed over for a number of years. I really enjoyed the photos of some of the rooms that I found on this site but I want to find out more!!! Can anyone direct me to any sites that might have more images, or tell me about the history of the "secret city?". Anyone know what it was actually used for? Cheers

Cheers Sharon! They were usefull!

If eggy, (the guy who posted the photos of under Central Station) is reading this can you let me know how you managed to get access. I gather from your previous posts that it was quite a top secret affair but I'm sure giving me a few wee hints wouldnt hurt!

IIRC he works for the railways in some capacity - engineering or such like. But, it might be worth just asking the station master (or whatever they are called - someone will put me right on this im sure  )

Of course, you aren't the only one who would like a look about, with the opportunity to take some photos...

Hmmm ... not sure i have that disguise in my wardrobe. What props are needed?

Maybe I'll see if I can bring along a train driver??? PGCC, you listening?

My interests are more related to Grahamston, urban myth and curiousity!

needs to look like official stuff, The Grahamston bit is, as far as i know is underwater and totally innacessable, i have been trying over the past few months without any success. I have just been told that some bits are going to be demolished soon as well. If you were intrested, i am going to go over on Thursday for an hour, but as i dont actually work in Central station is in the lap of the Gods so to speak as to where we can coax the station manager to show us. I could lend you a Jacket. Mibees a wee bit big though!

Wow, a tour would be great! Thursday morning? That would really help my project. I'm making a temporary memorial to the people of Grahamston in Central in a couple of weeks so seeing some bits under the station would be a total inspiration! I can bring a clip board to make me appear more official!!

Heh. I'd love to go see this, but I'm DJing on Wednesday night so probably won't be in the land of the living until well into the afternoon! :(

Just reading this old thread...
Sharon, did you go on the illicit tour? If so, what did it turn up?

Cheers,

Tim.

I never did make it on the tour...work managed to get in the way of my freedom to make the visit. :(

I'd forgotten about this...I wonder what was demolished?

I wonder too.

I have been down underneath to certain parts, but that was a few years ago now, and was just to visit a model railway club that have, or at least had a room there in one of those old rooms.

If you know where the lift is at the right hand side of the station, sort of opposite the entrance to the low level, then it was down there.
There was also what looked like a firedoor that led to stairs down beside it.
Round about platform 10 or 11 if I remember.

This, it would appear, was just at the same level as the road that goes up to the carpark.
I was not aware of these rooms beforehand, and I am even more curious now to hear that there is much more.
Exactly how deep does it go to??
I can always rely on this forum to make myself feel about 10 times worse than I did before
