Didn’t notice this earlier today but I think one of the round glass type manhole covers in the 420 Sauchiehall Street pic may be the one posted by Cumbo in the Corporation tunnel Hope Street thread. I’ve been looking for this for some time now as these are pretty unusual and may warrant further investigation below the footway.

think I’ve came across the correct definition as “prism glass”
http://glassian.org/Prism/

site that describes Hayward Brothers products/history

Hi toomse
Thanks for this thread. Lovely pictures, and a great connection to the Hayward's Patent Pludelux Pavement Lights.

thanks Ronnie

Any pictures I’ve posted on here that are in any way decent is by pure chance as I know zilch about photography. I’m only interested in providing a record of where I’ve been however I was quite chuffed with the quality of the two I took on the roof of the Argyle Arcade :)

joint credit to potatojunkie & Cumbo here

Paid another visit to 420 Sauchiehall Street today with the intent of gaining access to the basement area. Unfortunately access is via the shop at the front which is currently dubbed up.

The glass manhole on the footway is definitely the one posted by Cumbo. There’s a large basement area below here that’s well worth exploring.

here's the other one a bit further east

not great but took some shots through the gap

Couldn’t tell from footway level if this underground area extends any further east but 63m along the street there's a large metal grille. The area below here is the same depth as 420 and looks like its heading back towards that direction. I wonder if their connected.

there's a large air extractor? thingy down here and it definately extends some way back towards No420

thought the glass prism outside 163 Hope Street was interesting as it’s outside the main entrance and not below a pub or anything

access via West George Lane

real substantial basement this - here's just the route towards the grille

Well I went to the property management company to get the key but they stated that there’s another room beyond this one that sites the sub station but the key was held by the Electricity Board. Just decided to quit while I was ahead at this point.

Excellent thread, this. I had no idea the glass in those things was anything out of the ordinary.

Excellent thread Toomse. one of these days yer gonae find that hidden village under Argyle/Union street area. :D

BTW there were Glass grilles all the way from Mandela place to the top of west side of Buchanan st up untill the mid 90s before they resurfaced the whole street, the place i had which is now City barbers had these grilles, had nothing but hassle with water ingress all the time, had them repaired a few times but they always leaked in to the basement which was the stockroom, the resurfacing of the street was a blessing. :D

Walking throught the town last week I nearly tripped on one that had a few too many missing glass sections.

I was wondering are these a thing thats Unique to Glasgow?

Ive been in other cities that have a similar arrangement but its a metal grille instead of the glass.

I think they are great, a bit of additional character to the city.

This is my first post, just discovered this place, fantasic site.

Nope sorry stirling has them too, and the company haywards is a London company so presumably they were in London also.
